An engaging story and esoteric screenplay from David Lynch. Sting plays a small role in this movie but his acting is quite entertaining. Many will shrug this move off because it's too "left of center" for their tastes but It's a Sci-Fi classic in my opinion.

The story is in itself really lame. But the movie is SO bad that that is its redeeming quality. I remember way back when watching it on HBO and i couldnt understand the story. I bought this to see if i somehow could grasp it and yea, after watching it 30 times I "understand" it... Basiclly " Boy comes of age, His Dad is murdered and said boy takes revenge.. Classic story , Epic movie Failure... So if you got too you got too. I promise you wont be dissapointed unless you are expecting an epic science fiction movie classic. Buy it . watch it . then flush the memory of it down the toilet !!

This, being a David Lynch film, has some quirkiness to it, but perhaps not like many of his films. I like it quite a bit, but mainly because I am a fan of the book series. There are some design elements that I find distracting. Some are even a bit preposterous, like the view screens that project odd geometric designs on the viewers faces. Weird. The personal shields are pretty cool, even today. The SciFi Channel produced a series that might be a bit closer to the books imagery, and perhaps a bit more true to the story. In that regard, I wouldn't mind seeing a total remake by a skilled fan of the books series, in the way that the first three Lord of the Rings movies were made. That being said, it is a good movie, and I recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. This is not the Alan Smithee version, though you may find many reviews out there that say it is.Read full review
I love Dune as much as anybody. I assure you there is no extended version available on Blu Ray for region 1 (USA) players. So far as I know, the only Blu Ray release featuring the extended (TV) version is a German import. You should also know the "extended" version is missing Thufir's death scene, and the gruesome "heart plug" death scene. David Lynch hates the changes to the extended version, and won't allow his name to be associated with it. The extended version lists "Alan Smithee" as the director. Everybody expects something more, but the theatrical version IS the director's cut. Lynch doesn't like the movie or even discussing it in interviews. If you want a region 1 copy of the extended version, you'll have to settle for a 2-DVD set that includes both the theatrical and extended versions of the film.Read full review
This is a Movie Classic. Another amazing and great production by the legendary Dino de Laurentiis. The effects and sets were ahead of their time, and although Frank Herbert's monumental novel would take many movies to portray properly, this movie is quite compelling in its own right. The soundtrack really works well, including other-wordly themes by Brian Eno. Top actors include Patrick Stewart, Jose Ferrer and Kyle MacLachlan. Seeing it in Blu-ray really brings you into the story!
