Olive Gilbert was a contemporary of Sojourner Truth. Sojourner was born a northern slave in the late 1700s. She survived as a slave 40 years and a freeman (freewoman?) 40 years. Her life was absolutely amazing. I was in a play about her (Sojourner Truth on Trial, Douglas Larche playwright and director) here in the US Virgin Islands. I love contemporary accounts because they bring the time to the reader. Olive worked with her to make her more acceptable to the male white population which was not very easy at that time. I thought I knew history but that period between 1800 and the US Civil War was a bit vague for me. Now, I feel that, in some ways, that period of time was more profound than anything that happened to date. So many figures who had no real blueprint to fight for human rights. Plus, it is affordable.
