IT WAS REALLY GOOD..FUNNY EXCELLENT STAR PLAYERS! JOHNNY DEPP!! BRANDO!! FAY DUNAWAY!! BRANDO PLAYS A SHRINK WHO FALLS INTO HIS YOUNG PATIENTS (DEPP) WORLD AND ENDS UP REALLY LIKING HIS EVERYDAY WORLD! DON JUAN REKINDLES THE PASSION IN BRANDO'S AND DUNAWAY'S LIFE AS HE WAS STARTING A NEW CHAPTER TO RETIRE. HIS WIFE THINKS HE'S LOST HIS MIND BUT ENDS UP REALLY ENJOYING THEIR TIME WELL SPENT TOGETHER! DEPP ENDS UP HAPPY IN THE END AS WELL SO U WILL REALLY LIKE THIS TWIST OF EVENTS! IT IS AN ADULT LINE FILM OF COURSE. EVEN THOUGH IT'S RATED PG-13 I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT FOR YOUNG ADULTS AS THERE WAS TOO MUCH SEXUALITY BUT IT'S DON JUAN THE WORLD'S GREATEST LOVER! LOL.. DEPP WAS AWESOME IN THIS ROLE!
Johnny Depp is a tour de force in this movie about a psychiatric patient who claims to be Don Juan--only Don Juan De Marco because his father was Tony De Marco, the Dance King of Astoria (near New York City). He tells his story in the movie to his psychiatrist, Dr. Mickler (Marlon Brando), and as it unfolds it is so unbelievable that it has to be made up. Or does it? Everyone is affected by this charismatic patient. The nurses, orderlies, and Mickler himself develop a whole new lease on life. It has become more romantic for all of them. Especially Dr. Mickler who now dazzles his wife Marilyn (Faye Dunaway) with a new sex drive with lots of compliments and romantic foreplay. But could Don Juan's story be true? A hint comes at the beginning of the movie, when Don Juan walks into a restaurant and completely seduces a restaurant patron who at first laughs at his costume and tries to get rid of him. That, Don Juan, says is his last conquest before he kills himself. And that suicide attempt is how he ends up in the psychiatric hospital in Queens. A synopsis of the Don Juan's story is this. His mother, a Mexican, met his father, an Italian pharmaceutical salesman, in Mexico--a love at first sight situation. When Don Juan is born, he is instantly a lover. He gets in trouble with his tutor, Dona Julia, and her husband kills Don Juan's father. Don Juan kills the husband. Both Dona Julia and Mrs. De Marco become nuns. Don Juan is sent on a boat to Cadiz, Spain, but ends up in Arabia somewhere. He becomes a lover to the sultan's wife and is kept with the harem the rest of the time. Therefore, he is with 1501 women all night. He romances all of them. Finally, he escapes and is washed ashore on the island of Eros, where he meets his true love, Dona Ana. She, however, finds out how many previous lovers he has had and spurns him. This is not a serious movie but it is not a slapstick comedy either. You will laugh out loud at times but cannot help having its spell cast on you too. Depp is fantastic in all of his outrageous roles and does not disappoint here either. Marlon Brando, in one of his final roles, is great as the psychiatrist Dr. Mickler. It is especially funny when you see him trying to get in shape on a weight bench. Faye Dunaway (Marilyn Mickler)has a supporting role but looks better than I have seen her in a long time and plays the psychiatrist's wife well. She is amazed at the changes in her husband and gets swept away at the end. Finally, the music is great. This is the movie where Bryan Adams' song, "Do You Really Know How to Love a Woman" was introduced. Plus there is a lot of Mexican guitar music. The whole movie will put you in a great mood. You will watch it over and over again to get all the characters straight. And you will laugh the second and third time as well.Read full review
I've seen this movie before and loved it I felt it was time to revisit an old favorite now that it's out on DVD. Johnny Depp as usual is stunning and believable in his role as Don Juan de Marco but the true surprise was his co-star Marlon Brando, he stole the show in my opinion with his portrayal of a retiring therapist who now is re-examining his life due to this one patient who sees things in a completely different way. His scenes with his on-screen wife Faye Dunaway could have had a bit more spark but as this movie wasn't meant to be all that deep it lent itself well to the storyline. Yes it is a story of boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, and yes boy gets girl back, it goes a bit beyond that to the strength of the human spirit and ultimately perhaps, fate. A great date movie, bu more than that..Read full review
Although some may say this is a 'CHICK FLICK', I highly recommend it to any man who 'doesn't understand women'(or himself, for that matter!) When a suicidal young man, who believes he is 'The World's Greatest Lover', is sent for counseling,he is believed to have a serious 'personality disorder'.(We've seen it before..Napoleon complex, etc.)He begins to tell his story, trying to validate the events in his life to prove it.As his tale unfolds,it is so well constructed, and shows so much wisdom gathered by such a young man, that his Dr. begins to try to put some of the new perspectives into use.Surely his insights seem very well-balanced. Marlon Brando & Faye Dunaway are a wonderful couple, and work these parts so well, that you must fall in Love with all of them. 'Don Juan DeMarco's' stories give so much insight into Life, Love, and the perceptions & misconceptions we cling to, that his viewpoints start to become crystal clear as not only very sane, but Genius! But could he possibly really be this Don Juan fellow he claims? YOU must make the decision. But remember... it could shake the very foundations of what you have based your relations on as grown-ups/adults!Your whole Life could change. In the end...does it really matter if he IS who he says he is? A wonderful heart opening, mind shifting movie! Go for it! You won't be disappointed!(Plus the Spanish Guitar music, scenery, costumes, and theme song will stick with you long after the movie is over!)Read full review
This movie makes the viewer wonder. Marlon Brando's character cleverly gives a mentally troubled youth opportunity to work through his delusions. One is left questioning just what is broken and what should be fixed in the world of mental illness. This cleverly written story takes viewers through some romance and adventure with a few strange turns. No better choice could be made to portray the promiscuous young lover than Johnny Depp. What a true professional. The ending will have viewers wondering, wanting more, and more educated in the arts of romancing. This is a great chick flick, but men who want to gain some ground in their love life could benefit from some sage advice from an unlikely source.
