If you are so inclined to even look at this item then you are probably aware of the Legacy that is Savatage. Jon Oliva left Savatage in the early 90's (the band that he and his late brother, guitar virtuoso, Chris Oliva, had founded more than a decade before)to branch out and do some experimental material, heavy metal of course, with a new approach, and came up with Doctor Butcher. TSO/Savatage guitarist Chris Caffery was the axeman used on the album and it is filled with riffs, weirdness, screams, insanity and the darkness that follows Jon Oliva's creations throughout. Not at all what Savatage was doing at the time. Melody is traded in for spiral wailing both vocally and Guitar Soloing. Heavy and sometimes surreal. If Floyd would have ever dabbled in this genre in their peak of exploratory weirdness it could have been the blame, or catalyst for this "Doctor Butcher". Caffery really shines on this album and it tells all...like why he is a heavy hitter, why Savatage picked him up, why TSO uses his sound and why his solo career is racking up the acclaim it has. Jon Oliva uses some new sounds and voices on this collection, also, some that he has refined in his more recent project Jon Oliva's Pain... check out any of these three discs... Pain is Hard and Heavy Metal Meets The Beatles. Back to Doctor Butcher... the reissue of this offering has some bonus tracks; demos and a brand new song from the Butcher men. Great Tracks on the entire disc.... if you love Savatage and the slice and dice vocals of Oliva.. you will love this CD.... without a doubt.Read full review
