Doc Martin, starring Martin Clunes, abetted by Caroline Catz, Stephanie Cole and Ian McNeice, has been on British TV since 2004. This set includes the first four series, consisting of 30 episodes produced through 2009. A fifth series of 8 episodes was shown in 2011 and should shortly become available on Region 1 DVD. Overtly, the program plays like a soap opera, but is underlined by satire, droll wit and often more than a hint of farce. It's hero - if you can call him that - is a successful London surgeon who has become ill at the sight of blood, so takes up practice as the GP in a small Cornish coastal town full of quirky, often rustic characters. He has probably the world's worst bedside manner and rarely displays a human emotion other than frustration with incompetence, though obviously very enamored of the local schoolteacher who, for some reason, has also fallen for him. His only positive assets seem to be his uncannily encyclopedic medical knowledge and absolute dedication to his job. This is fortunate as the small community eventually displays just about every usual and unusual disease known to science. This has become one of the most popular series in British television history, for good reason. The 4-album, 9-disc set is beautifully produced and includes a few extras but, unhappily, no cast or crew interviews; one can only imagine they were too busy laughing out loud when the cameras weren't rolling.Read full review
Doc Martin is a British series, set in a magnificently lush seaside village where everyone knows everyone else, and even the village doctor can keep no secrets. His receptionist, a gum-chewing gambling and computer game addict, cares for her boss and his patients in her own "my video games come first, but I'll get to you in a second, hon" manner which infuriates The Doc...But he can find no better person to take her place, and he HAS tried....Each episode is masterfully crafted to deliver its greatest comedic impact by The Doc's blunt, often heartless, literal manner. He does not understand the need for civility in dealing with people in general, and patients in particular. But he is often screamingly funny, at his own expense. The episode where he accidentally kills an over-pampered but badly supervised cute toy-sized dog and carries it around wrapped in newspaper to a party is not to be missed. His sensible Auntie can also deliver a few surprises, yet he learns and manages to take everything in his stride. Endearing, hysterically funny, and acted perfectly, the series makes the viewer fall out of the chair with laughter. I am looking forward to more. If you enjoy "House," then you will see some of that brashness in Doc Martin, but tamed and tethered by This Doc's inability to understand simple social mores and codes of behavior - with hilarious results. Highly recommend this dry, warm, slightly nutty, very funny series!Read full review
My wife and I both your British comedies. We were very pleased as soon as we watched the first episode. Although it is a comedy, the story lines are excellent. A terrific mix of humor and serious drama. We highly recommend it to anyone. The area of England where they filmed it is absolutely gorgeous

Fascinating story of a man who is skilled and meticulous in medicine and human nature. Interesting and funny characters make up the community. Personal relationships ebb and flow throughout. Fun to watch the whole series many times with new pieces appearing with each viewing.

Not only does Doc Martin know "what's what" when it comes to medicine and what is best for his patients, he also has a side of him that doesn't try to get too close to his patients yet tells them like it is! Even with his issues with blood and a dog that insists he belongs to him, along with all the towns people ... Large, Al, Morena, and the schoolteacher that catches his eye, Louisa. All the characters together make this show what it is today, and why they've asked for a season 10!
