While disaster movies are a genre that leads to a lot of stereotypical elements in the plot, there is still a lot that can be done to make an engaging story. One element, of course, is that the plot is something believable and that the viewer can picture him/herself in. Another element is character development. A troubled romance seems to be a universal element. Then there is the question of the resolution of the crisis: do the hero/heroine survive? Is the solution an excursion in "deus ex machina," or is it something that seems intelligent? Happily, these films stand up reasonably to our critique. Yes, they are low budget and it shows, but the movies are watchable and entertaining. They are worth the investment.
