One of 60+ installations ( all brands ). This SDXN136PS sound decoder's excellent in my HO Scale Stewart F3 ABA ( 3 powered ). #9961 CB&Q Speed match'd with it's mates ( 2As ) "B unit" provided ample space for a larger speaker. ( richer sounds) "Blasting or Scale" volumes are extraordinary ! A units w / lights also have "N" Digitrax decoders ( PC ready ). My future's thrill packed with proto-typical fun !

It's small and great for N scale or small HO loco's. My only issue is a very annoying humming/buzzing coming from the speaker when set up on Sound profile #7 which is one of the 2 provided sound profiles for steam loco's and of course is the one I need. At times louder than the primary mover/chuffing sound. I tried resetting the the decoder, lowering the volume of about everything, etc... It seems to be fine on the other sound profiles, though I did not try any of them for very long. So it may be great for diesel applications. The humming/buzzing is intermittent and is triggered by turning most of the other functions on and off. I have 2 of these decoders and tried them both with the exact same results. The sound output is also very, very low. I won't be using these again as there are better options on the market at the same price point.Read full review

The SDN136PS sound decoder lends itself to installations in locomotives (such as the RS-1) where there is very little room. Only reservation is that the speaker, being very tiny, requires some sort of baffle to be heard at all - although a clever mounting can use the loco shell as a baffle. The important thing is to enclose one side of the speaker with some sort of small spaced object. Another option might be to mount the speaker in a dedicated trailing car (boxcar or baggage car, for example) with a miniature plug and socket for a disconnect.

Nice very small decoder, but included speaker needs a enclosure or it will sound bad. Or you use a 8 ohm 8x10 mm sugar cube speaker (for N-scale) what makes it sound even better.

Since I am a novice, I did not understand need for speaker baffle?? Could barely hear it so I cut it off and attached a bigger one I found in my junk drawer. All I got was static. Put the original one back=static.. Ordered a speaker/baffle \] static. Need better pics and information for novice. Locomotive runs great but not sound, not the end of the world.
