Devo's 2003 show in Japan proves their quirky, amusing theory of de-evolution works-- and still rocks hard even after a new generation of devo-tees arose. The crowd clearly adores the band, and the camera quickly finds them wearing an interesting variety of devolved ephemera. The band's fierce punk ethic shines on their cover of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction," which Mick Jagger has described as the best cover of his song. The show opener, "That's Good," sets of the fireworks with a nod to Devo's new-wave period. True fans recall the band performing this hit at a bat mitzvah on the '80s tv show "Square Pegs." Classic material such as "Whip It" and Freedom of Choice" (inhale to the chief version) showcase precision musicianship and the durability of Devo's songwriting. A truly subversive performance filled with eye-opening visuals, is followed by interviews with Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale, Devo's main instigators. Hilarious outtakes of tv commercials filmed in Japan by the entire band, including Bob Mothersbaugh, Bob Casale, and drummer David Kendrick, round out the bonus material. "Devo-- Live In the Land of the Rising Sun" is highly recommended for both casual and serious collectors of Devo's mutated muzika.Read full review
Besides their videos, DEVO Live in the Land of the Rising Sun filled my expectations. There are interviews and short Q&A sessions inserted within performances, which provide insight to the DEVO experience. Expect to see an aged, but still very good group, still full of performing energy... As always, I missed "Working in a coal mine" and "Beautiful world", but the rest of the performaces are still a good, representative selection of what DEVO stands for... It is interesting to see so many japanese youngsters very interested in the DEVO Phenomena, plus anecdotes! Bottomline: If you are a DEVO fan, you will enjoy this DVD.
