Captain Cassidy played by Cary Grant ( To Catch a Thief, Suspicion, An Affair to Remember, Operation Petticoat, etc) is the captain of United States submarine, the Copperfin. As he navigates the ship from its west coast port, his orders are a secret, and the destination is the city of Tokyo. Traveling through the treacherous enemy waters, Cassidy knows that he will soon reach the shore, where he has been ordered to land a meteorologist (John Ridgely) so he can capture valuable information to be used for future air assaults over Japan. Veteran action movie director Delmer Daves (Spencers Mountain, 3:10 to Yuma-original movie, A Summer Place, Parrish, etc) leads this movie in a very good effort showing realistic submarine shots in a time (1943) when much editing was in place for the war effort. A good classic war movie that war movie lovers or collectors of Cary Grant movie will certainly enjoy- and will give many a very good nights entertainment as they enjoy this old classic movie.Read full review
I have an interest in movies about WWII. There are many errors in the movie but depiction overall flow is very good. I was unaware of this mission to Japan just prior to the Doolittle raid on Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor. This movie was both entertaining and informative. Remember this movie was made in 1943 so cut Hollywood some slack because they lacked the technology used in movies today. If you don't have an interest in WWII, this move may not be your cup of tea. I thought it was a good movie and will watch it more than once.

made in 1944 this B&W gem ~ Cary Grant as a Submarine captain who does not know his SECRET mission is to go right into TOKYO BAY and take the war to the Japanese mainland~ traveling via the Aleutian Islands to Tokyo Bay the sub mission is not boring. We fall in love with each member including Alan Hale and the ever womanizer (John Garfield) who has a girl in every port and a handsome very young JOHN FORSYTHE. ADD a emergency appendectomy with NO doctor on board~ and you have a GREAT adventure from all angles. very good special effects and good shots you feel like you are sweating with the crew as they crash dive and sneak through the Japanese submarine nets~ top crew and story~ I give this a solid 9 out of 10 for pure fun and adventure! Cary Grant always had an easy flow as an actor. He always looked so comfortable and at home on a movie. This was always one of my favorite, but he had a bunch of great ones. Love the classics where you see the good actors when they were really young and just starting out.

Had to buy this on DVD because my VHS would not play on the new 1080 HDTV. The DVD has much better picture. Great movie of "Hollywood" submarine action. Cast is great. One of my all time favorites.
