I bought this receiver to replace my Sony STR-DH510, which was a fine receiver, but it could not pass through HDMI 3D signals. I brought this Denon because, not only could it handle 3D HDMI signals, it could also upscale S-Video, component and composite signals to higher resolutions, up to 1080p and output them through HDMI, directly from the amp. I have an old Mitsubishi S-VHS player with S-Video output, but playback on this machine was very limited for years because neither my HD TV, nor my HD projector have S-Video inputs. With this Denon amp, I can now play my old VHS tapes through HDMI cables on my TV or projector with upscaled resolution. The big drawback with Denon has always been the terrible Denon owner's manuals, so I use Batpig's Denon to English website to help me with that. This amp sounds better than my Sony did, with a better surround effect. It is a 7.1 amp, but I only use 5.1 channels, and that 5.1 mode is easily selected with the remote. I could not get the Audyessy Auto setup to work right on this amp, but I was able to manually adjust the speaker volume settings to get a good sound. I had a problem for a few days with being unable to get the amp to pass through HDMI sound or picture to the TV from the DVD player while the amp was in standby mode, but that works O.K. now, for whatever reason. Partly, it self-corrected and partly I learned how to get some of it working on my own. This is an excellent amplifier, that fits my particular needs very well. I watch a lot of movies in a home theater, and I never really heard a really good surround sound effect until I got this amplifier. I am very happy with it, but happier still to have gotten it at such a good price.Read full review

I love this Denon AVR-791. It is easy to setup and the on screen display that appears on the TV screen makes everything really easy. Sound is clean with plenty of volume for my HTS. It didn't come with the remote but you don't have to have it to do Audessy setup or for any other adjustment. I do have a Harmony 650 universal remote and will use it but I didn't need it for setup. Best $75 bucks I've spent in a long time. I'm a senior citizen and I wanted something with OSD and easy speaker and HDMI connections. This receiver is exactly what I wanted

150.00 after purchase of remote and microphone if I did not have a microphone for this unit it doesn't sound as good you have to use the audacy automatic setup in order to have the Dynamic Sound On which gives it the volume.
