The Tascam CD-301 is built very well and mechanical operation is quiet. It delivers slam and nuance. In a head to head comparison to the Rotel RDV-1040 and the Cambridge Audio Azur 540D, I find it closer in quality to the Cambridge. Comparison was made with all three identically cabled to a B&K preamp feeding an Adcom 6000 amplifier driving Andrew Jones speakers. In my opinion the CD-301 bested the Rotel in all aspects even though the RDV-1040 is very good player. The 301 has better soundstage width, height and depth. The bass is well controlled and powerful. The highs lack some air but are well defined. It has a sense of drive that the Rotel lacks. I find the Azur 540D to have better depth and width with more ambient detail. That being said, I see the Azur and the CD-301 as equals. Different sonic presentation but musically equally enjoyable. The CD-301is a joy to use. The buttons are large and have a solid feel. The display is large and bright. The transport tray is smooth and quiet. Easy to recommend (Other CD players used: Acurus ACD-11, Marantz 67-SE, Parasound C/DP-1000/D/AC-1100)Read full review
