My wife and I own 2 Dell MP3's: the 5GB pocket variety and the 30GB iPod equivalent. The Pocket DJ is a fantastic MP3 player considering its ease of use, 5GB capacity for the pocket size and price compared to Apple. Navigation is a bit more cumbersome compared to iPod that many of our friends have, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. The sound is terrific, however, I would recommend upgrading to better quality headphones. The downloading/burning software provided by Musicmatch is adequate. We experienced major problems with earlier versions of software/hardware compatability. However, the two companies have seemingly fixed the bugs. Dell's support was very good, especially if you're patient in communicating with technicians in India. It's definitely worth saving $80 - $100 with Dell vs. Apple. The only downside is that aftermarket add-on products are more limited to non-Apple MP3 manufacturers - a very small compromise if you ask me.Read full review
I decided to buy the Pocket DJ as I wanted an MP3 player that would be compatible with my Napster to Go subscription, which the Dell is, sort of. As an MP3 player, a stand alone device it's good. Much easier to use than my Samsung YH-920 and a lot easier to carry (although it's also got less space). It also is chargeable and syncable through a mini USB cable - no more proprietary cables to lug around with you, and if you use it at home and work as I do, the chances are you already have a suitable cable at both locations or if not they are easy and cheap to buy. That's the good side. The bad side is how easy it is to turn one of these into a brick. You need to flash the firmware to upgrade it to Dells 'Play for sure' firmware in order for it to be compatible with Napster. This can be easily downloaded from Dells website. So I downloaded it and reflashed the firmware. Well I tried to. It stopped halfway and although the device looked fine, the installer refused to do anything else. OK I thought lets chance it and unplug the player, which by this time had rebooted and looked fine. Didn't seem to be a problem so Napster was fired up which recognised the device no problem. The problem came when I tried to transfer stuff - napster asked me to reformat the player and then reflash the firmware. A bit of googling found the instructions to reformat the player which I did. On the rescue menu there was also an option to reflash the firmware, which I also did. Unfortunately, going to the play for sure firmware stops the firmware program on the PC accessing the player, oh and the first thing it does when you reflash the firmware is to erase the old stuff. The result? An instant brick! If I had bought this new in the UK I'd be returning it even if the warranty had expired as this is so unbelievably badly designed that it easily comes under the category of "unfit for the purpose for which it was bought". If one of my students submitted a system as badly designed as this they would fail that assessment! My conclusion? A great wee MP3 player if a) you don't need the play for sure firmware or b) by some miracle you do succeed to get it installed successfully. If you do want to use it with an online store however I wouldn't risk it and I'd spend my money elsewhere. PS I've an nice small silver brick going cheap if anybody wants it!Read full review
Even though there are many pitfalls to buying an older, hard drive based MP3 player, you can't go wrong with these Dell DJ's. For a cheap price, you can easily pick up a 5 - 15 or 20 gig player for about $30. The navigation is so easy due to the roller bar control on the front. One word of advise - there are 3 types of these players. The older one are boxier, square corners, and are notorious for having issues with the head phone connector breaking (an easy fix, IF you don't mind disassembling the unit and re-soldering). The OTHER 2 types have rounder edges. There are large and small versions of these - I prefer the larger one.
It is small easy to carry etc... However, I have had problems with all my dell mp3 players and napster. The merge of the two are suceptiable to corrupt files. Therefore, you have to delete all songs and reboot and start from scratch. That is after you find which song may be corrupt. I spent over 4 days with napster and dell support tech..., and never corrected the problem. They both blamed each other... So great for copying cds, terrible with napster! Also that is all Dell Mp3's not just the 5 as I have all three sizes!
I think these are handy little gadgets to have. Your favorite song is just a arm reach away in your purse or pocket. My daughters both have these same Pocket DJ's and carry theirs everywhere with them. I am a music lover so I play all types of music in the car. Yes, even that dreadful sound to kids...Classical Music. My daughters tell me...Mom no more of your Elevator Music and they put on their headphones and listen to their own Pocket DJ's. I bought my DJ only because they had one and thought uhm that might come in handy. I am selling mine only because I do not use it enough. Well, someone has to drive and with them having their own...I get the car radio SPEAKERS! Sometimes they tell me to turn it down. These Pocket DJ's can hold up to 2400 songs. Also, the playing time for the battery is 9 hours. So an Average car ride long distance with kids for the day is shorter than 9 hours (depends on who is Driving?). This is a great gift for your kids. One thing I found most important was that you can control what's being downloaded to their DJ's. The size is small enough to fit in a pocket or pocket of your purse. You can buy different kinds of holders or pouches for them to keep with the latest fashion or just to protect your Pocket DJ. I have had no problems what-so-ever out of these and I have owned these for about a year.Read full review
