The PN-20 GPS does exactly what it's supposed to do, but don't expect it to be very intuitive and easy to learn. I don't know if its Big Brothers (the PN-40 and the PN-60) are any easier to use or if they just have more features -- and cost a whole lot more. But the PN-20 takes a lot of learning before it starts to produce good results. You can download or watch videos on U-Tube on how to work with it. You can also download the operation manual from the Delorme web site if it isn't included in your package. There is an excellent review and How-to in some kind of hiking magazine. Just search for PN-20 and Delorme and you'll find it. Considering the difference in price, you'll save hundreds of dollars by choosing the PN-20 and then learning how it ticks. Always remember that no GPS is a substitute for a map and compass because the field of view on the screen is, at most, 2X2 inches whereas the map shows you the whole area. Also, you don't need batteries for a map and compass. But as a supplement to those old, trusty tools, this is an excellent adjunct. One last point that is very important... The slot for the Secure Digital (SD) card is under the batteries. You need to GENTLY touch the top of the plastic slot that the SD card goes into and it will pop up slightly so you can tenderly lift it up with a fingernail. Please DO NOT pry it up or you will break it. It is very fragile and the wrong pull and it's ruined. Study it like you were going to cut a diamond before you even touch it and you'll see what I mean. Whoever designed it must have had very delicate fingers because it sure isn't made for a mountain man. Enjoy your new GPS -- give it a new home and you'll be glad that you did. The Topo 8 map software that comes with it is worth the price by itself. Excellent. AlanRead full review
I bought this GPS because my husband and I had started a new hobby - geocaching. He has the DeLorme PN40 - which is more expensive than this one. Mine will work adequately for this hobby - however his has a few more options that I would like to have had. If I was going to buy another one for this hobby - I would probably buy the more advanced one - because it fine tunes the distance. This receiver will not show everything that is sometimes needed - however it has been adequate for what I am doing with it. It stores a lot of things in memory - seems easy to navigate to the areas needed and can delete info as needed. The manual was not with the product - but I have been able to access one online. This is a good product for a beginner in geocaching - or for anyone just needing to know how to find locations while traveling.Read full review
I brought a Pn-20 used from ebay and as much as I would like to rave about it I can't. I own various Garmin and Magellan hand held units; I use them for hiking and Search and Rescue purposes. I use the units in conjunction with a compass and topo maps; I pull UTM's from maps and enter them into the units and do it often. I can say this about the Delorme: It is built well and it fits great in your hand. It is really designed well and just looks good. The Topo software that comes with the unit is excellent, better then the Garmin software, however it is more complex then the Garmin software. I have a connection issue with the used unit I purchased thus I have not been able to use it with the unit. However it is not as accurate as any of the Garmin units I own. It is often off by 10 or 30 meters when compared to the Garmin's. It also has this odd quirk - when I try to edit a position, it won't let me save the new coordinate, it reverts to the previous entry. Also, it is slower to acquire a fix then my other units. Maybe the newer Pn40 or 60 is better; the design has great potential.Read full review
THIS IS THE GPS for outdoor lovers. With fast loading, easy to access multi layers of maps, topo maps, and color satellite images you will be impressed. Recording trails, building routes, marking waypoints are a breeze compared to any other GPS unit and software I have tried. While outdoor GPS's are somewhat complicated by nature, the instructions with the DeLorme units are easy to follow. You can even use the GPS unit hooked up to a laptop to easily watch your movement live on the computer screen using the bundled TOPO software. I have found that using the DeLorme Earthmate PN-20 is just plain fun. I keep mine plugged into a USB power supply both on (and in) the vehicles and in the home. That way, battery consumption is near zero. I also have my camera clock synchronized with the DeLorme PN-20 GPS unit so I can Geotag my pictures with the TOPO software on the laptop. With DeLorme's Topo software you have access, at a modest price, additional maps and images that make the whole package the most complete anywhere. If you want a GPS that talks to you and tells you where to turn, this is NOT that unit. But, if you want to see where you are, have been, or are going to on a road map, topo map or satellite image, your gonna love it.Read full review
I've used this DeLorme PN-20 model for many years and it's always been helpful out in the field. My only improvement would be to have a larger screen as it is quite small and makes it difficult to zoom in while still seeing multiple close points in relation to one another.
