I am not reviewing the whole CD, just track 4 which is a favorite of mine. At first listen you may find the intro groovy....or annoying. Remember, this was created in the 80's with all those synthesizers that were not as sophisticated as the models available today. The bass is a typical Res Bass and very "Madonna" sounding. The synth is a little harsh as it stabs it's harmony counter the bass. Get past it. When David starts playing the song cooks. A staccato melody fits the bass/synth work with his barking alto, and I say that with respect - cuz I really dig the way he plays. Second time through the melody he embellishes; it's hip and funky. The bridges are cool, he harmonizes with some outrageous bends I can't even do. He must use a tip opening of .190! O_o Actually I think uses an alto Dukoff D9 which is .90 The solo he plays is the money. He totally smokes it, ripping a hole in any nonbelievers and converting the uneducated. I love this solo. Smooth fast chromatic runs, ripping licks, and altissimo the way only David can do. You may or may not like it, but I bet you can't do what he did! And even if you can, I never heard of you ;) Sanborn invented modern smooth jazz. Never discount this guy. His new stuff is great. So is his stuff from 20 years ago. I still listen to this one alot. Unfortunately a lull in Sanborn's career, a period in 1987 when good material was in short supply. The opening cut, "Chicago", could have been accompanied by some great material penned by others in the smooth jazz r&b stable of writers prominent during that time. For whatever reason, Sanborn chose to fill the the record with substandard writing. There's nothing memorable about this outing. A below par effort by the king of r&b sax.
The Story on Change of Heart by David Sanborn is that I have introduce it to my Nephews leaving New York going down to Florida with my Kids and they did not wanna to hear that type of music, but I play the CD with no mercy by the time we got to Washington they ask me to put it on and on until they started Begging me to put it on again and again, that Tell you that is Great Music for your Ears , Just listen and enjoy Repeat until you learn the meaning you will be very happy and Will Love David Sanborn For Ever.
