Actor Matt Dillon (OVER THE EDGE, THE OUTSIDERS) makes his directorial debut with CITY OF GHOSTS, an atmospheric thriller about an American man who finds himself in a very dangerous Cambodia. Dillon plays Jimmy Cremmins, a New York scam artist who has been working as a front man for a phony insurance company established by his employer, Marvin (James Caan). When the scam is exposed, Jimmy heads for Bangkok, where he meets an associate, Kaspar (Stellan Skarsgard), who informs him that Marvin is in Cambodia. Soon, Jimmy is prowling the streets of the downtrodden city, trying to solve a mystery that gets more convoluted every day. Along the way, he meets the beautiful Sophie (Natascha McElhone), an artist who wants Jimmy to leave his troubles behind. But Jimmy can't abandon Marvin that easily, for reasons that only he appears to know.Written by Dillon and novelist/friend Barry Gifford (WILD AT HEART), CITY OF GHOSTS is an ambitious, entertaining mood piece that features enough twists and turns for three movies. Gerard Depardieu steals the show as an easily excitable bar/hotel proprietor.

Takes patience.
First of all I did go to Thailand on vacation, and saw some of the sights. So cast out ideas of a travel video here . You would never want to go to this country on vacation. This is a crime film set in an exotic land where bad things happen. The plot could be set anywhere in a third world country where corruption rules. Having said that, this is an entertaining film, that only strains your capacity to believe only up to 80% or so. Most bad guys get what they deserve, except for the hero whose complicity in evil does not get acknowledged. Sadly, there is no recompense for the victims seen in the opening segment of the film. It's as if the movie was more concerned about the life of the hero rather than what he did to others. So the hero goes on to do his thing and leave behind a nasty taste. So OK, this is how you treat a despicable parent? Then go on to find a reward of an beautiful lady?Read full review

A con artist who must go to Cambodia to collect his share of money from an insurance scam. Jimmy (Matt Dillon) is a conman who's been working for a fake insurance company in New York City that is being investigated by the FBI after it cannot pay claims that have poured in after a hurricane. Discovering that his mentor and the mastermind of the scheme, Marvin (James Caan), has skipped the country and gone to Thailand, Jimmy boards a plane with the intention of trying to collect his money. Once in Bangkok, Jimmy meets Joseph Kaspar (Stellan Skarsgård), a partner in the scheme who's living with his Thai katoey companion Rocky (Kyoza). Joseph informs Jimmy that Marvin has moved on to Cambodia, where he's planning an even greater scam. So Jimmy sneaks across the border and makes his way to Phnom Penh. He checks into a seedy hotel run by a Frenchman named Emile (Gérard Depardieu) and has his passport stolen by another traveller. Later Jimmy has his sunglasses stolen by a macaque monkey. Needing to travel around, he hires a cyclo driver named Sok (Kem Sereyvuth), who becomes the only person Jimmy can trust. He also meets an NGO worker named Sophie (Natascha McElhone) and dabbles in romance with her while attending a rave party at an ancient temple. Eventually, Marvin turns up, but the scam he's trying to get together – involving corrupt Cambodian government officials, high-ranking military and the Russian mafia – turns out to be more risky and dangerous than anyone ever imagined, taking Jimmy on a surreal odyssey where even the most polished criminal can end up on deadly ground.Read full review

Matt Dillon stars and directs this movie and it turns out to be a much better effort than his initial directing effort (Albino Alligator). In this movie, Dillon plays Jimmy Cremming who is headed to Bangkok, where he hopes to hide out after getting tangled up in an insurance fraud investigation. While there, he discovers that his mentor and partner in crime, Marvin (James Caan), is in a very dangerous Cambodia with the loot. All Jimmy wants is his fair share of the money, but the closer he gets to Marvin and his world, the crazier and the more dangerous that his life turns. The movie gives a good look at a time when Cambodia was very dangerous- and under communist/war lord control. It also has some exciting & suspenseful scenes and a method of a surprise ending, when Jimmy has a chance to get all the money - but settles for less-and his life. Will give you a good night of entertainment, some good looks at life in the cities of Asia and some of the dangers that lurked there. Gerard Depardieu plays an interesting and great part as a bar/hotel owner, that is in the KNOW about everything, has contacts with the police and the crooks, and you will definitely be surprised by his ending. Definitely worth buying-especially at the reduced ebay cost.Read full review

A trip through wonderland to get to the bottom line.
Very trippy movie as Matt Dillon loses himself in a bizare Bangkok/Cambodian enviorment searcing for James Caan who plays the part of the elderly knowldgeable gangster very well but you dont realize that until the end. As Matt travels throught this chaos he finds out whats important in life. The director did a great job of giving you the sense that Matt was a stranger in a strange land by giving the movie that "Fear and Loathing in las Vegas" feel to it. Beautiful Natascha McElhone and Stellan Skarsgard are over here from the movie Ronin both doing there parts very well especially Skarsgard. And Gerard Depardieu is a real treat to watch here as he stomps through the scenery like a raging bull perfectly adding to the sense of chaos.

An evocative movie, a film in glace. A good plot w an excellent James Caan inspired M.D. to show his stuff. He hasnt been this good since Flamingo Kid IMO. Beautiful cinematography. You will enjoy this one.
