I bought this CD, Christ Illusion by Slayer, on Ebay to get a sample of what Slayers music is all about. They (Slayer) are touring with Marilyn Manson this summer, and I am going to the concert - so I thought I'd pick up some of Slayers music to get a taste. So far, I'm enjoying the Christ Illusion CD. I think it gives me a basic picture of the type of music they play, and what they are about. I'm glad I bought it! I find Ebay is a great place to get CD's from artists I am interested in and at a lower price than I'd paid retail.
pro: similar style from other albums, full of rebellion, hate type energy. cons: vocals are a bit weak in complete ideas or subjects and at times doesn't flow with the music. as a long time heavy metal fan, this album is more thrash than metal. I had listen to 'reign in blood' to have a reference. The music seems under produced and the lyrics need a revision, i guess to hit the 6-6-06 deadline they fast tracked a lot of the music, Tom's medical issues should have fired up the horror but seems to be a distraction in the creativity of the music. They missed the deadline and decided to put out a limited edition t-shirt. For hardcore slayer fans this is a good album but for the more mainstream heavy metal fan this is a sub-par collection of songs. This album reminds me more of 'god hates us all' left overs then new material.Read full review
Christ Illusion is a trustworthy, decent album. It's got straightforward thrash songs. The album contains some very fast and angry thrashers as well as a few mid-paced. All of the best parts sound like early SLAYER. The band still has it to make quality tunes. Dave's such a good, driving, intense drummer. He makes the album come alive and tracks such as Skeleton Christ and Cult owe so much to his talent. The songwriting quality varies a bit. The most enjoyable tracks are the more traditional SLAYER songs. The fast-moving opener, Flesh Storm or the extremely mosh-worthy Black Serenade which both reek of past glories. Catalyst, Cult, track 6 and track 10 are all quality SLAYER tracks. This is a decent release from mighty SLAYER.

This album reminds me of "God Hates Us All." There are a few good songs that still have the speed, agression, and some great guitar solos, but the the album seems rushed and incomplete. Some of the riffs in the beginning are little cheesy. Some of the songs are a little slow, but are worth listening to until the the thrash part and blazing solos. Slayer is still hanging in there. If the good songs from "God Hates Us All" and "Christ Illusion" were combined, this album (in my opinion) would be a classic.... third or fourth behind the other greats. This band has been around so long, it's a wonder they still can come up with two or three good songs after each album. At least they haven't disappeared, died or broken up like so many other bands. And at least they remain true to the music (at least how they see it). They didn't popularize their music like Metallica.Read full review
Christ Illusion is easily Slayers worst album to date. There are tons of nu-metal riffs, gay choruses for the trendwhores to sing along to, and horrid vocals from Tom Araya. Take the first song, Flesh Storm, which starts off sounding like a modern-day War Ensemble, but breaks into a weak chorus that is almost unbearable to any old Slayer fan. I am still a Slayer fan, but after hearing this album, I cant say I would support this farce of a CD. In fact, out of the 10 songs, Id have to say that there are only 2 or 3 worth listening to. A song like Jihad, which starts off sounding like something Blink 182 would do, serves no purpose being on a Slayer album. Another big problem is Tom Araya's *singing* - STOP THAT !!!! Toms vocals are getting to the point where they are downright annoying at times. And the lyrics; I understand questioning religion, god and war, but the way it comes across is quite childish. There are some positives: Dave Lombardo is back on drums, the production is similar to Seasons in the Abyss and well.......... thats it. Sure there are some cool Slayer-sounding riffs here and there, but they throw in these god-awful, slow, nu-metal garbage riffs as well (for instance Black Serenade). Maybe Kerry King has been listening to too much slipknot. After 20+ years, maybe its time for Slayer to stop writing albums and just tour. Songs I can stand: Cult, Consfearasy, Supremist Songs that are horrible: Eyes of the Insane, Jihad, Black Serenade The rest arent worth your time either. Dont believe the hype !!!!! Me, I'll be listening to Hell Awaits.Read full review
