I think that this is a great flash for 35 mm photographers & artists. I have had other Canon flashes and what I like about this Canon 199A is that it has the (I don't know what you call it) the ability to go from a 90 degree angle to a 45 degree angle and the photographer can bounce the flash. It also came with a leather kind of a case. Very nice. If you are interested you can find the instruction booklet for the 199A on line. The pdf 199A instructions can give you a better explanation of this product. There are a lot of other neat features for this flash that I did not mention.

I cannot say if the flash is easy to use or if it has consistant output or if it re-cycles quickly. This is because the four AA batteries were left in it and they leaked that white acidic stuff in the battery chamber. I am still trying to clean it. If I am unable to clean it adequately, I will have to bring it into a camera repair shop to get an estimate from them. I anticipate that they will say it's not worth the money to clean that old flash attachment.

After breaking the mount on my old flash I purchased this one online through an eBay Seller. His store was The Running Rooster and his id name on eBay was cypress6767. The flash is above and beyond my expectations. His description was as follows: Description The Canon Speedlite 199A is an automatic electronic flash unit designed for AE photography with Canon A-1, AE-1 and AV-1 cameras. This Canon flash features a high guide number of 98 with ISO 100 film to give you greater reach or working distance for a flash. When set at AE, in case of A-1 or AE-1, this automatic electronic flash unit sets the shutter speed and f/stop. Thanks to a large light output, this Canon flash increases the scope of flash photography. The Canon Speedlite 199A is the most powerful shoe-mount Speedlite in the Canon line that simply illuminates your subjects. His description was extremely helpful and I am glad I made this purchase.Read full review
Overall, this is an excellent flash. It is a bit bulky but well-designed and powerful. The capacitor takes a few seconds longer than I am used to for the initial shot but recharge is fast between shots. Definitely turn it on the second you take it out of the bag as you might still need to wait a few seconds after it's mounted. I picked this one because it has a wide-angle adapter. I used a conventional flash for a group portrait at 24mm and the sides ended up darker than the middle. If the wide angle adapter is important to you, make certain it is included, as it is a slide-on attachment. I also like that it allows my camera to use 50% faster shutter speed.
I left the batteries in my previous flash (I know dumb move) found this flash unit at a good price. I had a Canon Rebel film camera and found a good price on a Canon Digital Rebel. I purchased the camera and I can use the flash unit on both cameras, Digital for common pics of birthday parties and such and the film camera when I want great pictures. Have a new Granddaughter now and love to take pics of her!
