Problem first: its rubber roller that pulls the paper in before print got kind of worn out and started having problem pulling the paper. I took the roller out and roughed up its surface for traction on paper. I had this model for few years; worked great but lately colors started fading. I would fill up the cartridges using syringe and never worried about number of prints since ink was hugely inexpensive. Lately it developed some error which required taking it in for repairs but I decided to scrap it since it might have cost more than what it was worth at this time. Keeping in view facility of refilling the ink, I bought same model from Ebay. It is working fine as well. Scanning, copying, faxing and printing all in one worked great.
Received as a Christmas present in 2006, this little beast has been everything I expected and more. I use this Brother 420CN all-in-one for printing shipping labels, photos, receiving and sending faxes and making copies. Oh! I also use it since I broke my cameras USB prongs. I print up to 10 labels per day with this machine, fax out and receive 2-5 pages per day and am constantly making copies. I've only used it twice for printing pictures. All of these chores, for me it does with ease. It is SO simple to use, although it does look a little difficult. My husband is computer illiterate, and he has NO issues using this. This is not the fastest printer, but I've had no issues with quality. I've had 2 paper jams, thanks to operator error. My favorite part of this whole machine is the photo card slots. I have a Kodak EasyShare, which I broke the prongs off inside the USB connection. Thankfully, all I have to do is take out my memory card, put it in my Brother and TA-DA! My Kodak program recognizes it and together they git r done! Ink is expensive unless bought here on eBay. I recently bought 1 black, and 1 of each color (3 total) for a grand total of $62. Only to get home and wonder why I didn't look on eBay. Sure enough, you can find 10 packs (4 black and 2 of each color) for under $30 with shipping. Overall, I give this an EXCELLENT rating. I bought this product because I had the exact same model before and liked it very much. The fact that it would copy, print, fax and scan made it very usable. The bad side of this machine is the process by which it alerts you when have low ink volume. It says you're low, you replace that cartridge and it doesn't recognize it, so you have to waste a lot of time to get the machine to finally accept the change you made before it will continue to work. Compared to other printers, I'm not sure because I've only had one other and that [Epson] would only print.
