I already had one that I had purchased extra toner cartridges for., After many years of good service from my my original laser printer, Brother HL-5250DN, the printer died. I thought that my spare toner cartridges were going to go to waste but thanks to the eBay purchased HL-5250DN printer they are back to being backup spare toner cartridges. Since I still have my originally purchased, but now defunct, HL-5250DN printer, I have some spare parts that I can use on the printer I received on eBay,

I have two HL-5250DN laser printers at work. I bought them NEW on Amazon.com in 2006 (I purchase and manage all the equipment in the lab where I work). It was not difficult at all to connect the printers directly to the internet (100BaseT ethernet connection), so that everybody in the lab could print to the same printers. What is more important, the printers were used a lot, both for single-sided and double-sided printing, and in three years we did not have a single problem. I was so impressed that in 2009 I decided to buy another HL-5250DN for my home (we have two laptops and two desktops, all connected to a 100BaseT ethernet hub). Unfortunately, Brother stopped making HL-5250DN. Now they make wireless network printers. I will never use wireless network for three reasons: (1) security, (2) speed, and (3) radiofrequency interference. Furthermore, I have hardwired ethernet in every room in my house, from one to three 100BaseT outlets per room. I installed Cat5E cables in the walls when I bought the house, before I moved in. So why would I buy a wireless printer? I ended up buying a used HL-5250DN for about $50 on eBay. One plastic part was broken, so I had to glue it together with something like dichloroethane or a similar solvent. I also had to clean the inside using a vacuum cleaner, compressed air, and paper towels. Now it works just fine. My wife is happy - she can now print from her laptop no matter in which room she takes it, and she does not have to change the settings. My son never had a printer before, and now he has it. I saw him printing his resume and some driving directions. The printouts are clean and sharp, and double-sided printing works perfectly fine as well. The speed is just amazing. We never turn it on or off, because it goes to a powersaving mode when it finishes printing. Black-and-white printing does not get any better than this.Read full review
I use the HL-5250DN every day as my go to printer. I am a teacher and have to prepare several handouts a weeks for my classes. It sits about four feet from my ear so I would like it to be a bit quieter. Accessories To Get: - I have the second paper tray, which allows me to switch between colors or sizes effortlessly. - Buy the largest piece of RAM that will fit into the printer. It is "no brainer" to install. Remove the cover on the left side of the machine near the rear, install the RAM, replace the cover, turn on the printer and you are good. The reason for the additional RAM is to allow you to print full resolution, full page graphics. The limited native memory limits either size or resolution of graphic printing. Network Connection: - Printer Server connection worked for me. I used a Linksys Wireless G speed print server and all the computers on my home network (four kids and the lovely wife + me) had simple access to the printer. Then the server died. - Connected to the network via one of the computers on the network is the current setup. This took a little bit of work to get it running correctly, on one computer it was reluctant to be found, on the others it was as simple as using the "add a printer" wizard. Consumables: - Toner cartridges. I use the high yield cartridge a TN-580, available on eBay at reasonable prices. I have had the printer for four years and I'm on my third cartridge. - Drum unit - I purchased a drum unit soon after I bought the printer. About a year ago the printer claimed I needed to replace the drum unit. I have not and have seen no reduction in print quality. The DR-520 unit is also readily available on eBay for a reasonable price, and for an unreasonable price so do shop a bit. Use: - Speed is good. I have not timed it but it is a fast printer, I print mostly duplex so this cuts into the speed quite a bit. - Print quality is acceptable. I have noticed some unwanted ghosting when running more than twenty copies at a times. I have addressed this by breaking up the larger jobs. (this is probably a symptom of not replacing the drum unit.) The ghosting is more pronounced when the humidity is high. The black is very black and the paper comes out smooth, no wrinkles and lies flat after a few moments. - Multipurpose tray is the light gray front of the printer swung open and down. I feed envelopes and odd sizes through there with good results. - Paper jams are rare and there is fairly easy access to the entire paper path if you remove the toner, drum and paper tray. This is a discontinued model and well worth picking up used, as I did mine. Be sure to have the seller double box it. mine did not and it received some cosmetic damage in shipment.Read full review
I have always used HP printers. A couple of years ago I got dissatisfied with them and when a local store put a Minolta on sale, I bought it. It was a good printer but it required me to remove all the paper to print envelopes. I hated that and it was not networkable. So after a while I decided to get a network printer. I have been unhappy with HP especially with the way they handled my defective monitor, so I did not even consider them. I did not have a need for color and I wanted excellent printing. After looking around I decided on this printer. The price was right and it had all the features I wanted. Setup was quick and simple. It has the ability for a manual feed without removing the paper tray. I love the fact that I can now print envelopes without having to remove the main paper. It also has the ability to add a second auto feed tray. I like the fact that it goes to “sleep” when it is not in use but has never failed to wake up when sent a print job. It is a little noisier than the Minolta but not enough to be distracting. It has a smaller footprint than my HP which is good if you are trying to conserve desk space. The duplex feature is the greatest. With all the manuals for your computer coming is disk format, this feature will say you a lot of paper if you want to print manuals out. It has proven itself to be a dependable workhorse and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a solid, dependable printer and a good price.Read full review
The features of the Brother HL-5250DN Black and White Laser Printer are not what you would expect for a printer priced below $300.00. These features include Duplexing, Network enabled printing, Envelope Feeder, Manual Feed tray, and decent image printer all in small printer that can fit anywhere in a small office or in a home. At the time of writing, I have been using this print for over a year, and have gone through the toner that came with the printer. I was amazed how long the toner lasts in this printer. I print documents and images galore and the toner never seemed to run out. The replacement toner that I ordered was the high yield 7k page toner. This should last another year with the printer or more with my current usage. I have used this printer in Windows XP, Windows Vista, and several different Linux operating systems without any problems. My current configuration is a totally isolated network printer that can be printed to either from wired or wireless(from my wireless router). Pages fly out of this printer at the advertised 30 ppm. Only slows down slightly when a full page image is printed. One word of caution... This printer pulls a lot of power when it warms up. I had to install a separate breaker line to keep this printer from dimming my lights and switching my battery backup to battery mode. DO NOT plug this printer on the same circuit with anything that drawls more than 5 amps. Some people have experienced curling of paper, but as long as you follow the guidelines set forth by Brother, then the paper will not curl. I followed their paper guidelines and have never had any curling on printouts. Also, and interesting feature is the auto stop printing feature that will stop printing if you have too much paper in the out bin. This will pause printing until you remove the paper to make room for more. For the price of this printer, don't hesitate to get a great printer and stop wasting money on "traditional" ink jet printers. Thumbs Up!!Read full review
