Pair purchased used, but in great condition, on ebay. Paid about 1/3 the price if new. Excellent speaker FOR THE PRICE. They are placement sensitive, i.e. to optimize their performance the pair must be placed just so (placed mine on a 12ft wall, 4ft from each corner, 4ft from each other, about 6ft off the floor). If you are able place them correctly, they sound great. For their size, regardless of frequency response numbers, base sound and feel is well above average. It is "full" though not "in your face"(no one will think you have a subwoofer). Also, you don't have to be seated in the "sweet spot" to enjoy "stereo" sound. The speakers fire at angles to create reflected sound and a more spacious sound stage than normal, front firing, box (bookshelf) speakers, but they are quite co-dependant. Sound is not harsh or hard but there is surprising detail, though not uniformly across the sound spectrum. Overall, the effect is pleasing. A great speaker for the size, just don't pay full price.Read full review
The Bose 201 series IV speakers are a great value for great full rich sound across the spectrum, and they are so well designed that some people might not even notice them, until you turn up the volume. They sound big, and have the kind of full range solid bass response you would expect from systems with a sub-woofer. I use these as monitors in my main studio, and they deliver great flat response and don’t require too much space, I have been in the radio business for 42 years and have used everything from EV Sentry monitors to JBL’s, Tannoy, Genelec, and these are an excellent value option to all of those.

Between 4 stereo systems in the house, I have 2 sets of 201's, 1 set of 301's, 1 set of 701's, 1 set 0f 901's, 2 sets of Accumas 3's and a set of 100's. Not trying to brag, just understand I love Bose speakers. Each type has it's own sound and use. The 201's are great as bookshelf or rear surround. In the den, the other set are the front spekers and they give full bodied sound. With heavier bass, they will rumble without distirtion. 6.5" woofers (201) can not put out as heavy of a bass response as 8" (301), etc. Pick a set of Bose that is right for your price and space, all will sound great!
Nothing beats the warmth and clarity of these midrange speakers. It doesn't hurt that I got them for less than half of what they sell for new. Minimal wear would occur over the years regardless. I rate these a 4 as they could use an updated design.
