Top notch machne, fabulous lighting around the needle and under the arm of the sewing machine. Stitches truely straight (not like my Janome). The dual feed option is fabulous for matching slippery or difficult seams. The touch screen is easy to manuver. The 820 does not do embroidery, for me that is fine. I am a quilter and have another machine that embroiders if I ever wanted to use that option. You should know that you cannot upgrade the machine to do embroidery like you can on some of the other Berninas. The machine is very heavy and not meant for moving from place to place. Find a permanent home for it in a cabinet or table it will be easier on your back. I think partially due to it's weight the machine does not vibrate when it is sewing like my other sewing machines have in the past. The large opening in the arm of the machine is amazing. I am sure you could manage to get bulky or difficult items sewn more easily than a standard sewing machine. My older Bernina had an opening of 7 1/2". My Janome that boasted a large opening only has an opening of 9" The 820 has an opening of 12". If you machine quilt on you domestic sewing machine this will be so beneficial. I have a longarm but for putting on bindings or even applique on a large piece the more space the better. Regarding machine quilting the BSR is the only one of it's kind. Having stitch regulation is amazing. It really helps new quilters look better than they are. And we like all the help we can get. I find stitch regulation especially helpful for going around difficult areas such as stitch in the ditch around applique. Threading is a breeze and the screen does a tutorial as soon as the thread path is initiated. The large bobbin is fabulous for sewing. You don't run out of bobbin thread as often and the less I have to change the bobbin the better. You can also wind the bobbin while you are sewing. No need to stop sewing just to wind a bobbin any more. Bernina always gives a fabulous manual with their machines. In addition to the helpful manual there is actually tutorials for techniques on the touch screen!!! This is truley the elite ultimate top of the line sewing machine. If you have never sewn on a Bernina you truely do not know what you are missing. It is an expensive machine, but if you can afford it, you will not regret it. This is my second Bernina and I will never buy a different brand sewing machine again.Read full review
This machine is a top notch choice for serious quilting and sewing. The 12" throat leaves ample manuvering room for even king size quilts. The stitch options are in the hundreds. The touch sensitive screen is intuitive and leaves a great deal of feedback. Touch a button to tie a securing knot, another button cuts your thread. Swiss engineering and quality are readily apparent in the Bernina 820.

I love my Bernina 820 sewing computer; however, it does take a while to learn to use it. It is very sensitive, especially the treading of both the bobbin and upper guide. I had to watch several YouTube videos and read many articles (more than once) before I was comfortable sewing/quilting on it. The effort was definitely worth it.

This is my third Bernina I have a 640 for embroidery and a 1300 Serger. I love them all, they are superior quality machines. I like the 820 though I have not had too much opportunity to use it yet. These are highly technical and sensitive machines, there is a small part which senses the upper thread as it travels through the machine, in mine that part was broken so it would only sew a few stitches and stop. Mine is in for repairs, luckily the repairs are inexspensive. I was told that in the 830 and 820 this particular part is problematic, it is small and plastic, I have never had a poblem with that with my 640 in 5 years. The store where I got this had updated all the software so it is the most up to date version, this should be done periodically. It can be done when the machine is serviced, or info can be found on line at Bernina USA, which is a wonderful site with all kinds of cool stuff and helpfull hints and ideas. The 820 was built with quilters in mind and to fit with the Bernina quilt frame which I have. It is a very heavy machine so not something you want to carry around much. And when putting these in a vehicle for transport, because of the computers put them on the floor if possible, if not, seat belt them! You really don't want exspensive computer repairs. I do know that I will be very happy when I get this back from my local Bernina dealer in a few days. I have test driven several, but my life changed and I could no longer buy a new one, but they told me this is a really good machine and very well kept so I am at ease now that all is well. I would recomend that if at all possible taking a class at a shop some where to really learn about all the little thing you can do, it is a lot of fun. Because I did not buy mine new the shop near where I live will charge $40.00. It will be well worth the time and money! They gave me a whole work book of fun techniques and info with my other machines. They will teach you how to us the BSR and program the computer to personalize it. You can also find manuals and info on line.Read full review
I love the machine. It is quiet and easy to use. I love all the accessories. I have had a Bernina for decades and likely will never change!
