I purchased my first Bernina 1230 in 1989 and it served as my only machine for 25 years. The Bernina 1230 is truly a work horse, in addition to being reliable, it produces beautiful stitches, sews through layers of fabric without problem (make sure you have a new needle) and most of the errors that I encountered could be easily remedied by the sewer. I would recommend the Bernina 1230 for anyone looking for a reliable, robust machine. The 1230 has enough "bells and whistles" for those who don't want to meander through all the technical aspects of the newer machines. I have never had a problem when sewing on the 1230 -- the sewing is smooth and the machine is easy to learn. Although I purchased a new Bernina machine in 2015 (my dream machine), I continue to use my Bernina 1230 when my newer machine has to be serviced, or I am sewing for charity projects and need to bring my own sewing machine. I will never trade my Bernina 1230!! After 25 years, it still has many good years left on it. Take care of it, and the Bernina 1230 will take care of you -- always ready to sew. After having several different sewing machines, my conclusion is you cannot go wrong with the Bernina 1230.Read full review

This machine sews like a dream. The needle-down feature is very helpful. I also like the knee lever for raising the presser foot. The machine is solidly built. The speed control is excellent with a very responsive pedal and the heel tap needle-up-down is very useful. I've been looking for one of these for ages, and am so glad to have found it. I hope for many years of happy sewing.

If I had to go back in time, I would keep all my BERNINA machines. I had the 930 Record, then the 1230. Now, I stopped trading them in and kept them (1630, Active 130, Artista 180E and B750QE). I can tell you from 30+ years of experiences with them, they all have special personalities and as individual machines they all have areas where they excel from the rest of the other brands. Example: 1230 was great with light fabrics (lace, organza, silk, and ribbons) and I like how I can just press a button and sew. I like the simplicity of just red lights and buttons. not digital reads. I really miss her. You will find it a joy to sew on her.

I already have a 1972 Bernina Model 830. I do a lot of quilting and sewing. The Bernina 1230 continues to exhibit the Bernina quality and the features are so easy to use. This machine is virtually trouble free. The instruction manual is clear and easy to follow. I recommend a Bernina (especially the older models) over any other brand. Don't go out and buy an expensive "new" machine. Shop for one of the older Bernina models. You will spend 1/2 the money and have 3 x's the machine.
I previously owned a Bernina Model 1130. When I broke it, I couldn't afford at the time to ship it back to manufacturer to fix it, so I traded it in. Biggest mistake ever! But had no choice, I needed a sewing machine for a costume order I had taken. I missed it so much & 10 years later I finally found this Model 1230. Almost identical, so I am sure to enjoy this one as much!! Nothing sews like these older, mostly steel parts machines!! I have actually preferred sewing on an old Singer 401, or Featherweight, than the new mostly plastic machines. I have a friend that bought a new sewing machine & gave her old Bernina to her daughter: it wasn't long before she gave her the new machine because she wanted the old Bernina back!! If you can find a Bernina 1130, or 1230, etc., DO NOT HESITATE!! They are workhorses!! They purr lie kittens!! My 'new' purchase is 20 years young, & I'm sure it will give me at least 20 years more!!Read full review
