I knew going in that this pedal had limitations. I had read that the Chinese tube was of poor quality. It Was! It sounded harsh..It Did! BUT...I also knew that for a fairly low price I had a good starting point. All the basic parts were there. The power supply, tube socket, controls, a metal case, etc. I changed the tube(tried 3 different tubes and did a few mods...and it's not bad. It still has too much gain but that can be moded as well. I still have a few more things I want to modify. For the bucks..Not bad if you're a DIY Moder and like to tinker to get your own sound!
When I first started to look for new pedal, I of course wanted to get things as cheap as possible with the best sound possible. What I found is that as far as guitars and effects go, cheap is not a viable option for good sound. This pedal in particular is, quite literally, unusable out of the box. Moving the drive anywhere past '1' is very over compressed sounding, thrashy and sounds like a poorly biased tube, all in all out of the box it sounds like THE WORST CHEAPEST big muff knock off, in the worst way possible. The only way to get this pedal to sound any is, sadly to have to buy the Bitmo mod for it, which are becoming more and more difficult to find, and will add another $30 or so onto your total cost. To be fair Behringer selling point is the cheapness of their pedals, which in some cases is really appealing, but the sad truth for this pedal is that tube drivers are expensive pedals. To properly drive a tube you essentially need a small tube amp in a pedal, and without these expensive components you aren't really driving the tube at all, and it really is just their for looks (and to add 40-50 dollars to the price tag). This in all honesty is not a tube driver at all, it is a hybrid between a solid state over drive, with a tube for gain voicing (but again without it being properly driven via a transformer it isn't doing much). After the mod it does sound better, but again you have to buy the mod for the pedal to be usable, and it is still a far cry from the original Butler Tube Driver. Give this pedal a shot, if you wanna explore tube drivers, BUT ONLY IF you are getting it with the Bitmo mod, or planing to get the Bitmo mod, (and i have no affiliation with bitmo, i'm personally appalled at the price of the mod, but it works so i can't complain to much) otherwise this pedal is honestly a waste of money, and unfortunately i fell for the "tube drive for $50" gimmickRead full review
Behringer have some wonderful clones tat real prices for palyers
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: New
what i like is it cheap i never see any tube pedal in this price, ans the case is metal, the things i don't like is the pedal is too big, the is not like a distortion not like a tube amp is more like fuzz pedal, the tube is not a good tube, if i have to upgrade all the things it might cost me more than buy a good one,
sounds awsome.on the downside it has very noisy/hiss from hell! thats probrably why their monster tube overdrive has a noisegate built into it.has a great tube tone overdrive.overall this thing screams, just make sure you shut it down as soon as your last solo note rings out.ML
