I'd decided to buy the book because I really liked the movie, however the director, Roger Christian, totally and in no uncertain terms ruined and killed the movie, that I have found out by reading the book. The only things the movie has in common with the book are the names of main characters and where they came from and what they breathed and that radioactive elements are deadly to them as their air blows up mixing the 2. The movie ends at just a little over 1/3 of the book, Ker, (Forest Whitaker) wasn't assistant to terl,(John Travolta), but a machine operator. I have to say, I really hate it when directors totally change the movie from the book so that there is hardly anything resembling the book. I really don't mind if a book has to be more than 1 or 5 movies in different parts, and it really could have been done that way, to have a sequel or 2 AS LONG AS THEY BASICALLY KEEP THE BIGGER PART OF THE BOOK IN THE MOVIE! But I would say they changed 98% of the movie from what the books was, and in this age of computer graphics and everything they can do digitally, they could have at least made even the very least 75% of how the book was written, and saved the movie and made so much more money if only they kept more to the book than to how they wanter to change it. I will admit again, I did like the movie, but now that I read the book I don't think I could ever watch the movie again. The book just plain ruined the movie for me. It's sad when prople who make a movie from a book change it so much that you would never think they were the same story. I've read lots of books that were made into movies and 80% of them have at least been close enough to the book that I like watching the movie. If I had been the writer of this book, L. Ron Hubbard, I would never have let such a butcher job done on my book... no ammouts of money was worth what the director did to this movie, and at the very least I would have withdrawn my name from the butchered movie, too embarrassed to have written something as good as this book was to what came out in the movie. In my opinion Roger Christian is one of the worst directors to have come out, and if it wasn't his fault of how the movie came out but whoever's jub it was to change EVERYTHING SO MUCH, then they should never again be allowed to have anything to do with movies again... This was and will be one of the all time greatest books of fiction written and I would recomend it to anyone who liked the movie as much as I did, but be prepared to be totally disappointed in what they did to change the movie... a 10 year old could not have done a worse job... but then this is only my opinion, but I believe there will be a lot of people who read this book after seeing the movie that will agree with me. I'm just really thankful that I saw the movie first before reading the book, otherwise I would have totally thought I'd gotten ripped off doing it the other way around.Read full review
I love a good story, and especially one that is a saga. This story has some great twists and turns and a very satisfying ending.

I've been reading this book in an attempt to share the enthusiasm my husband has for this book. I admit that I wouldn't pick up this genre to begin with, however, I'm about 300 pages in and I have to admit that I am enjoying this book. This is a true escape from the reality I live everyday that involves cleaning house, changing diapers and cooking for the family. The original copy that we have in the house is falling apart and I wanted a book in my hand that would remain intact. I also didn't want to pay full retail price for the book -- HOORAY FOR E-BAY!!!
This is an awesome book and I would also highly recommended it for any sci-fi/fiction fans out there. Hubbard has a slightly 'older' style of writing but his writing is very engaging. The plot is an interesting concept of a post-apocalypse Earth that has been taken over by an alien race - the Psychlos - and where mankind is on the brink of extinction. The plot is engaging and embodies a great sci-fi concept, but without the simplicity or shallowness of a Harry Potter novel.
I won't post any spoilers for those who haven't read it. Just note the following: It is a very well written and creatively thought out novel. I have read many books, in fact at least one a day since I was 10(we won't get into how many years that is), and this is one that sticks with me. I very rarely reread or even purchase novels, preferring to move on to new territory, and utilize the library. This one is not only worth rereading, it is worth owning. 5 Stars.
