While ADV has recently released the Gatchaman series in full via lavish DVD box sets, these original US DVD releases from Rhino, which highlight the Battle of the Planets incarnation, remain a treat worth tracking down for true fans. Each volume includes 2 episodes of Battle of the Planets as well as the corresponding uncensored Gatchaman episodes from which they were culled. Rhino also crammed an episode of G-Force, the slightly truer-to-form US adaptation of Gatchaman broadcast in the 90's, into the mix, making this the only place you can view all 3 incarnations side by side. It may have been an over-ambitious formula, Rhino was unable to sustain the releases beyond the initial 6 volumes and two smallish box sets, covering only 40 or so episodes in total (about half of the entire BotP run). They may have unwittingly sabotaged themselves as well, as this was likely many fan's first taste of the original (and admittedly superior) Gatchaman episodes, and though Rhino's emphasis was clearly focused on the Battle of the Planets end of things, it wasn't long after the release of these sets that clamor in the US for a full set of O.G. Gatchaman episodes began to reach a frenzied peak.Read full review
