A very artful, intense anime. Basilisk is the tale of two fierce ninja clans, the Iga and Kouga, battling for the fate of feudal Japan. The current Shogun pits the two groups against each other, in order to choose which of two heirs will inherit the title of Shogun. All this aside, nothing but hate is the true fuel for the ninja's war on the other clan. The animation is smooth and visually stimulating and the story is pretty good. With a fairly short run, (24 episodes) a long complicated story moves quickly and there is usually a good kill or battle in every episode. The only thing that is weird is the main character. He's pretty wicked but he's also kind of boring and pretensious. Check it out!
Ok maybe you think anime and cartoons are just for little kids? Well take another look! This anime Basilisk s top-notch. It has everything, Action! Romance! Drama! Humor! sex!, violence!I bought this for my older children(not recommended for under 14 YRS) and they begged me to watch it with them,so I did. It was amazing. Right from the beginning I was drawn in as two young people are in love, the problem is they are from different ninja clans that have had a feud going on for over 400 years! The young man is to be the next leader of the Iga clan and the young woman is set to be the next leader of the Kouga clan. The young couple want to marry and end the centuries old feud so both sides can live in peace. But it is not that simple, even though the feud is centuries old there is still a strong animosity by many members of each ninja clan. They would be killing each other daily except the Shogun had a no hostility pack drawn up and that has kept both sides at bay for years now. Now for some strange reason a retired Shogun has asked the leaders of each ninja clan and and few member to come to the Sunpu castle and stage a exhibition of their unique fighting techniques. Their ninja techniques are very strange and deadly. The exhibition is very exciting and now comes the kicker, the retired Shogun informs the leader of the Iga and the Kouga that both ninja clans are to represent a different boy child that is inline to be the next Shogun and the winning ninja clan will decide which boy will be the next Shogun. The leaders of the two ninja clans agree but say the no hostility pack must be lifted in order to compete effectively. The Shoguns representative agrees to lift the ban. Now the real battle begins as both sides leave Sunpu castle. Well I do not want to ruin this wonderful and sad story so you will have to buy it or rent it and judge for yourselves. I recommend buying it as you will want to watch it many times. I give this anime a 10 STAR rating. My only complaint is the ending was not to my liking and wished the creator would have ended it differently. This is not like cute Disney or loony toons type Warner Bros cartoons it is very violence and bloody. There are mature scenes so please screen if buying for children 14 to 17. Not recommended for children under 14 years old.Read full review
Basilisk is a series that uses it's number of episodes well. Any more and they would have risked dragging, any fewer and it would have thinned out characterization too much. The story is well paced and the flashbacks are, for the most part, handled properly and with no confusion. Inevitably you will find you favorites in this war of the Koga vs the Iga, but the real stars are the lovelorn leaders. The series is an excellent reminder of how a group of people can hate another group and not really know why...yet some are brave enough to try and break that cycle. The character design and the animation is beautiful. If there is any criticism I can give it's the lack of any type of extras on the DVDs. Other than that, it's excellent.
a great story anime at it's finest great characters and a wonderful twist ending
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
One of the best animated series of all time that has inspired several similar series and a great movie (Shinobi, Heart Under Blade). Definitely a must see and own for older fans of the anime genre. I emphasize 'older' due to some more graphic scenes (brutality and sexual situations).
