This book was the first I've read by Alice Hoffman and I really enjoyed it. I'm not a big fan of short stories, however this one was different because each story revolves around different inhabitants of Blackbird House over different periods of time. Blackbird House, a character in it's own right, seems to influence each family that lives there, and each family seems to leave its impression in the house as well. Although the book is melancholy at times, it only adds to the nostalgia of this beautifully written story. It is romantic, sad, inspirational and a little supernatural all at the same time. If you are someone that needs a definitive ending to every story, let me warn you that some of the stories leave you dangling a bit, but not in a way that makes you feel as if you've been cheated. Some stories just don't need a concrete ending because the important part of the story has already been revealed. Overall I loved it and I certainly plan on reading more of Alice Hoffman's novels in the future!Read full review

An unusual work by Hoffman. She weaves her magical short stories into one by basing it on a real house (the oldest house in New England). It starts from the loving fisherman who built it for his wife to present day, across some 200+ years. There are many characters throughout, but by far I love the woman with the red boots! Once you read the story, you will know what I mean. A recommended read. ****4 stars
