I first tried this very famous microphone with a so-so mic preamp.....it was just ok; however, when I plugged the mike into my Great River M-1NV, MAGIC HAPPENED! The microphone is world-class, but be advised ONLY a great Mic Preamp will bring it to life!

The AT 4040 microphone lives up to its name sake. having full features for its line, and the included shock mount is wonderful. the XLR cord is long enough for most home recording setups and is quite durable. on the flip side, I do advise caution while looking into this combination product. The Zoom UAC-2 while perfectly fine on its own, has ZERO support for older CPU Chipsets as Well as any CPU manufactured by AMD. nothing on the buyer's page gives information to what CPU the UAC-2 has compatability to, and as such this information was not found out on my end until after I had received my package.

I was looking for a quality condenser mic that would add a bit more polish to my home studio but still be within my budget. I read a number of reviews on this one and also got a good recommendation for this mic from a local professional studio owner. The build quality is excellent... solid and rugged feeling. And the sound? Warm and detailed at the same time... has room to breathe and doesn't sound "brittle" like some of the lower end $80-100 knock-offs. The only thing I don't like about it, and it's not a big deal, is that it is hard to install in the shock mount that comes with it. Fortunately it comes with a nice velvet bag to cover it, so once you get it into the shock mount you can just leave it in the mic stand... no need to take it off and put it in a box every time. I have one other condenser vocal mic... one of the "knock-offs" and this one beats it hands down for a smooth, professional sound. I've used it with both male and female vocals, mostly bluegrass and country, and have been really happy with it so far. Would recommend this mic to anyone looking for a reasonable priced, quality studio vocal mic.Read full review
I bought this mic to complete a stereo pair. I ended up with my 1st AT4040 by chance on a trade. After using it repeatedly with great success, recording several different style of vocals, decided it was time to complete of purchase, a second, for stereo recording. I'm currently in my 26th year as a professional audio engineer, and have not been this quickly, and thoroughly impressed with a microphone design, since the Audio Technica Pro35 (another fantastic A-T product). This microphone posses a smooth low thru mid frequency response, with the familiar sounding 6kHz peak, and transparent HF rise within it's audio spectrum. It has a warm, resonant proximity when recording male vocals. The AT4040 has substantially adequate level for digital recording, requiring minimal amplification to achieve a solid 0db VU with even the quietest of sources. Combine these qualities with low self-noise, and highly phase-coherent transformerless output circuitry, the AT4040 is a fantastic buy.Read full review
I decided to buy it because it was reviewed as one of the best in its price range. I got it used, for significantly less than it sells for new, and I'm extremely happy with it! It picks up everything. The first thing I did was plugged it in and recorded some harmonics on the guitar. The recording I got was amazing! That's all I've really done with it so far. But I love it death right now! Perhaps you can call it infatuation, but it sounds great! I was running it through a compressor, but even when I bypassed it, it still sounds crisp, sharp, warm when it needs to be. It is very sensitive though, picked up some birds chirping outside, which was new to me. Best condenser mic I've used so far!
