This movie really touchs ya and makes you feel the emotions. Very highly recommended.
Sean Penn has never played in anything that wasn't top grade! This is an 80's movie but most 80 movies were awesome! Loved it and one you can watch over and over and never get tired! Good plot and keeps you interested!

A gripping story of small town southern rural crime and a young man's effort to escape his own dysfunctional family drama - when people talk about Christopher Walken's best performances, they often overlook this one, which I think is nothing short of mesmerizing. Sean Penn, along with the supporting cast members, are likewise effective and entirely believable.

I've enjoyed this movie for years -- superb performances by Walken and Penn and the others, and it's especially nice to see Millie Perkins (of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK) again. James Foley's direction is striking, yet not intrusive. The characters are powerful creations -- Walken's is one of the nastiest creeps you'll ever see on screen. A minor classic, well worth owning.
