There is quite a bit of question about Sven Hassel, and some say he made it all up. Assignment Gestapo is one of my favorites of his books, they are all entertaining. I did a review of Monte Cassino, and should have mentioned that of all his work I have read, that book is certainly the most inaccurate historically, as he mentions fighting US Marines in Italy in 1944. As a former Marine Corps officer, I was well educated in USMC history at OCS and The Basic School, and to my knowledge, no Marines ever served in Italy, or the European theater in general. So read Sven for fun, not for history. He does tell a good story.
