This is, essentially, where it all started, with the iPod and this is the 2nd generation Nano. This is still a fantastic music player and incredibly thin with great sound. It does not play video, have a camera or have radio. It is a simple, thin mp3 player which happens to sport the timeless, sexy Apple design. I only want the music and don't care about radio, video and such. I have an iPad for that. For music, this is tremendously easy to use, very small. I (and I am by no means alone on this desire) still wish they would return the click wheel for the simple yet important (to me) reason that you can use this without looking. I can change songs, FF, Rew, pause and control volume by touch. I don't see why this is so overlooked as an important feature. In bed, on a dark airplane or while walking or exercising, you DO NOT need to look at the device to control it. The newer touch devices, though wonderful and sexy in their own right, lack this basic function. For music only, this can't be beat! I just wish there was crossfade and a timer. I like the next song to fade in while the previous song is winding down and I like to set a sleep timer while in bed. Those are two things that were introduced in 4th gen and later Nanos. The 5th gen is where Appple retired the click wheel and in my opinion, it was a mistake. I still use my Nanos VERY MUCH (I have a few, 4th, 5th, 2nd and 7th (the new one) I do not like using my iPhone or iPad for music, too big and bulky and they lack crossfade which I REALLY like even though my 2nd gen also lacks it. For straight music playing, the 2nd Gen Nano is simply teriffic! The clickwheel on the 2nd gen is better than the 3rd, 4th & 5th. It is a bit bigger and just works better and is more responsive, not sure why, perhaps because it is a bit bigger. If you want just mp3 music and can find a nice condition 2nd gen Nano with 4GB or 8GB, I highly recommend this, STILL TODAY! (6/2013). It is a perfect, well designed music player.Read full review
I say the BEST because this ipod suits me the best. This ipod is only for playing music, not for watching videos, radio, exercise tracker, etc. I use it mainly for listening to music while skiing, working out or traveling. The reason why this ipod is superior is because it has the click wheel. You can skip tracks and toggle volume without looking at it, while it's still in your pocket. With touch screen, you cannot do that. Also, a lack of color video screen means more battery power for the long run. You're not going to watch a movie on the tiny screen, anyway. The slim shape of this ipod slips into any pocket (and jeans mini pocket) with ease. This one, 2nd gen, really is the BEST.

Hi: I'm 59 years old. I didn't think you could teach old dogs new tricks but this one has learned some new/fun ones. My son had to download the songs for me (I haven't figured that part out yet) but the player itself is great. The battery will run down before I can get through all the songs. I have to remember where I stopped and go there as the unit does not remember where I left off to get it recharged but other than that it's amazing what this little guy does. There are over 500 songs on it and I know it will take more.
I bought this 8GB 2nd Gen Nano to replace a 4GB 2nd Gen Nano that I seem to have lost. I like the design and basic capabilities of the 2nd Gen Nanos. Plays music, podcasts and holds pictures. Listening to music/podcasts is all I need it for. I don't need all the other fancy stuff of the more recent Nano Generations. It was sad to misplace/loose my 4GB, but it was a blessing in disguise since I was able to upgrade to an 8GB for less than I had originally paid for the 4BG!! :)
