Made originally for students (so it's practically bulletproof) this is for the writer who wants no distractions - no email, internet, or anything but four to six lines of text. It's simple to move text back and forth to any document (word, email, etc) by plugging it into your laptop with a USB cable. Other obvious points are that since it only has a small LCD screen the AA batteries it runs on literally can last up to a year. It hold (I understand) up to 100,000 words, enough for novel - although more likely than not you will be uploading your work at the end of the day. It also turns on instantly, so it's as fast to jot down an idea as opening a notebook and taking out a pen. The keyboard is nice and spaced, like an old PC keyboard, so you can write on it for hours. It's light and never heats up. The only negatives I can see with this is that the screen doesn't light up, but who cares? One more thing that won't break. I know there are best selling authors who have used this to draft their work, and it's so small you can throw it in a backpack and take it anywhere. A few years back it was over two hundred dollars. Now we got this one for about nineteen, (34.00 w/tax). I think once the chromebook came around these became dinosaurs in schools and so there's a warehouse in Texas that has them. If you're looking for a way to get that draft from your head to the screen, this is a great tool. It has cut and paste and a basic spellcheck. The only thing you'll have to poke around for is if (like me) you want to send files TO the Neo and not just from the Neo back to your computer. There is software available and it's easy to do, but you have to google "Neo Manager" and it will take about fifteen minutes to set everything up. But then it's simple to send files back and forth. I love it.Read full review

The AlphaSmart runs on 3 AA batteries and has, with just those three batteries, a power lifespan of hundreds upon hundreds of hours. When the batteries die or the unit is turned off, no data is lost: it saves as you type. The unit allows for 9 different files, and although it slows in use if the files become too large, it handles data well in general. The typing feel is smooth and not sticky, though it requires more pressure than a laptop keyboard. They keyboard layout is a Mac style set-up. A simple printer cable will port it out to any computer via a USB connection and will send the data from any file or allow the AlphaSmart to serve as an external keyboard to that computer. The AlphaSmart does not do formatting or anything fancy, but allows for quiet, efficient, rapid responses that can be saved. It does not have a robust spellcheck system. It does allow for text wrapping in paragraphs rather than need a return to be hit at the end of each screen width. The particular advantage to it is that it does nothing more than take data entry: no distractions from the internet, no distractions from other applications, no alternate activities to drift off into. The LED screen is small, but sufficient for simple word processing/data entry in work as you go, but real revisions are best done once the data are transferred into a larger computer system. This device is ideal for use for children and people with poor, slow, or painful handwriting when doing school work or note-taking. It has been a lifesaver for my son, who has high functioning autism, and a number of my students who similarly struggle with writing. Good for classroom settings,l or for notetaking in business environments, or even for taking work to the beach or out somewhere and still writing. I adore this device.Read full review

This word processor is awesome. It is very light, under 2 pounds, and will promote more productive writing because it eliminates internet distractions. I bought it as a gift for my brother who is a writer. Research gave me a good idea of what this model could do. I believe it was a very good value.

Arrived on time and in good condition. Send key could only be activated when pressed really hard, but otherwise it works just fine. Screen came without scratches, and the keyboard feels nice.
