AITF, Season Seven...ABOUT TIME!! A Completist's MUST HAVE (and one that has been LONG-overdue for a DVD release)...BUT, there are reasons. Sony's sales of Seasons 4,5,6 were WAY below expectations (more so because they released all prior seasons so SLOWLY) and while THOSE seasons were EXCEPTIONALLY GREAT, they probably figured "hey, if we can't sell it when the show was still on top of its game, then why even waste the money on the seasons where it was beginning to die?" THANK YOU to the "Shout Factory" for acquiring the rights, as they already have Seasons 8 & 9 lined up for release. SO...what exactly is "wrong with Season 7". Well, as was becoming evident in a few episodes of Season 6, and I have always said this "ONCE ALL IN THE FAMILY LEFT ITS 4-PERSON STAGEPLAY FORMAT, IT DECLINED IN QUALITY RAPIDLY". And in #7, it is REALLY evident. First off...LIZ TORREZ as the Puerto Rican girl sets Hispano-American releations back 100 years with her AWFUL portrayal of "Teresa the Live in". Her "Missy Bonkers" and "pliss, may I rint a rrroom?" dialect is OFFENSIVE to even Non-hispanics, and her casting nearly sinks the whole season singlehandedly. Second...WAY too much time is spent in "The Sunshine Home", and frankly "old people in a retirement home being tended to by a Dingbat" just IS NOT THAT FUNNY...PERIOD. Third...The Jeffersons have long-since "moved on up", so a lot of time is spent "next door" now occupied by Gloria & Meathead, where they continue Gloria's pathetic attempt to make a "Mae West impersonation" funny. Fourth...A CAVALCADE of veteran "has been" characters and character actors show up almost non-stop (is this "All in The Love Boat?"). Everyone from the barstool toadstools at Kelsey's, to "visiting guests" (Bummy Fencil, Beverly LaSalle comes around again, and WAY too much Barney Hefner!). AND, for some reason...the show is now "filmed" like every other show on the air. "Roving camera crap"..."different angles"...scenes of the house NEVER seen before"...etc. It looks "too polished" and feels less REAL. But I digress on the obvious. Let's find a few positives. FIRST: "The Lorenzos" are GONE FOR GOOD! Thank God for that. Aside from Stephanie and Teresa, those two were the most annoying characters in the entire show. SECOND: Carroll O'Connor CARRIES THE ENTIRE SEASON all by himself. Although the writers felt he needed to be written as "watered-down" by this time, he STILL makes every episode a must-see. Whereas Edith is WAY TOO "liberated", Mike is way too "domesticated", and Gloria is "just plain boring." So, enjoy ARCHIE on this season...as HE is the only one worth watching. BEST EPISODES are the 3-part season kickoff "Archie's Brief Encounter"...."Mike and Gloria's Will"..."The Draft Dodger" (BEST EPISODE of the season!)..."Stretch Cunningham, Goodbye" (EXCELLENT!)..."The Joys of Sex"...and 'Mike and Gloria Split." THE REST? "Fair" at BEST. Several are downright AWFUL (e.g. ANYTHING with Teresa, "Fire", "Mike the Pacifist"..."Mr. Edith Bunker"..."Mike Goes Skiing"..."Beverly Rides Again" And this is VERY SAD, as you know me...I am the show's #1 advocate. For ME to say something bad towards this show...well, it HAS to be bad. Overall...DEFINTELY WORTH OWNING for HALF of the episodes, but now you will see why the show failed to rank #1 for the first time in its run. In fact, it finished 12th in Nielsens (its WORST showing of ANY season). But by FAR, still better than ANYTHING that ever airedRead full review
this was a great comedy. I felt it had a message on how stupid bigotry is. Also, how too far a person can go politcally, to loose creditability. This on Arcie, as we'll as Mike. Mike showed disrespect and argued everynight with his provider. In the real world he'd be on the street. So, I thought although some saw the show as racist. It was quite the contrary. It grabbed both sides. Alwayy's felt All in the Family was white's going off the end , while it's take off the Jefferson's was the race went off the deep end. So, just enjoy this show for the fun.
This obviously was the RENTAL edition, not the retail, consumer edition. I could tell because it contained previews and commercials at the beginning of the first disk. I would not have minded, but these in particular, were not only long, but you COULD NOT SKIP OR FAST FORWARD THEM.
