John Grisham is a master of plot writing. His first book, "A Time To Kill" is often confused as his second, because "The Firm" was such a hit. As a result, "a Time To Kill" is a completely different story than we are used to. A cast of outstanding actors leads this story of racial hatred in Mississippi during the trial of a black father who turns vigilante after several drunken teenagers rape and nearly kill his nine year old daughter. The man waits for them in a closet in the court house and guns them down, rendering a police officer crippled for life. The remainder of the film is about the trial and though Akiva Goldsman, screenwriter, doesn't offer his own opinion regarding what is right or wrong, it's impossible not to feel the personal tug one feels as we imagine what we'd do if our own daughter was dammaged for life in the way that this girl was. In this way, there's a hint of "Sophie's Choice" in this. Killing is wrong. Vigilante action is illegal. But human emotion and the love for a daughter is very strong., The filmn is very good, sloppy at times in regard to editing but brilliantly acted (Samuel Jackson deserved an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the father on trial.) Bullock and Spacey have won oscars and been glorified for all of their work; Matthew McConaughey is brilliant in this film and some other parts suh as this one will show his glean. The film is moving, well acte and very well directed. The adaptation of the book to screenplay is brilliant-just enough of the hatred and violence to capture the essence without shocking us as the book does. The film is well worth it.Read full review
I find this film to be imminently watchable. Great cast, with Matthew McConaughey's first big studio debut! He cewrtainly doesn't get blown off screen, and if youre female, well, enough said! Samuel L. Jackson, brilliant as usual, same for Kevin Spacey. the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughey leaps off the screen and the scenes between McConaughey and Donald Sutherland are great! I'm a big fan of Oliver Platt and he is brilliant as always. Ashley Judd was good as the wife and Charles Dutton turned in a very solid performance. The always brilliant Chris Cooper was spot on as the inured deputy! Kiefer Sutherland as a racist was hard to watch, but it should be. Brenda Fricker is excellent as the secretary with the wisdom of her years and the foolishness of her youth both equally displayed and sprinkled throughout her performance. We don't see her enough on screen. She is always great! joel schumacher did a fabulous job directing and the film is watchable in that "it's my favorite pair of slippers" way that some film are. I have no idea how many times I've seen it, but it's a lot! The final court room summation is truly powerful and something every single person should hear and think about. It is brilliantly written and very powerful! If you haven't seen it, you should. If you like drama, or lawyer films or enjoy any of these actors (and who doesn't0 grab it, some popcorn and a beverage and make a night of it.Read full review
I know that it's a great movie but the very day I got it I tried watching it. It got half way through the movie and it starts all over again. I've tried it several times and the same thing happens. I still have it in the case but threw the packaging away. Can I send it back for an exchange or can I get a refund? I'd prefer getting the same movie. I've e-mailed the rating 3 or 4 times and haven't heard anything back. Thought it was strange because you guys have always got right back with me. Please exchange this movie for me. Thank you and God bless you.

It's crazy how dead on the characters in the book almost seem written for the actors in the movie. Great movie and book. It's rare you can make a movie almost as good as the book. This movie certainly did this. The cast was absolutely amazing. Almost ever actor has been in some other major movie now. Overall rating for this movie=Amazing Very worth your time in seeing it. It's very powerful and moving. The book and the movie. This is what happens when several extremely talented people get together and do a project like this. Thank you to John Grisham. Thank you to the directors of the movie, cast, and all the other people.
For me it was a time to learn. Growing up in the 60's in the south I often wondered what made some people think they were "better" than others. I know if I close my eyes and hear laughter there's no way to tell the "color" of the laughter. When someone cries, its the same way. What "color" are the tears? I don't know what that is. I hope for you it can become your time to learn as it was mine. Unbelievable movie with an incredible impact for anyone that is watching. I highly recommend this movie to all audiences to see this (R) rated movie. Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, and Kevin Spacey star in this film about race relations in the south in the 1960's. Such a well written and well acted movie is hard to find. They really tug at your heart strings towards the end of it. Matthew McConaughey summarizes in the trial that changed lives forever and bring tears to everyone's eyes. It just touches your heart and soul. Hats off to those who watch.Read full review
