Still in the first chapter but thus far the author jumps right into the earliest recorded Christian influences in the U.S. and Canada. Beginning with the Spanish Catholics and Christopher Columbus in the 15th century and advancing from there. Most issues will be addressed and questions answered in this reading. Looking forward to completing the reading and helping to round out my understanding of how we've developed as a nation into the diverse Christian atmosphere that we live in today. It's truly impossible to give a thorough study to American history without including the religious aspects. Many of the first explorers ambitions were centered around advancing the Christian faith and proselyting the native peoples. It was integral then and integral now. It is the fabric of who we are. We would be remiss and in error to try and deny or obliterate it from the historical archives. I highly recommend this book as part of your literary diet!Read full review

Although running over 500 pages, this book is respectfully concise. It is laid out admirably and is easy to follow. Noll not only knows is stuff, but is able to make noteworthy present-day applications with an eye to the future. As a learned man, the author's insights prove dubious. The final comparisons between the two countries are treated fairly and with practical implications. When we understand our past, this will help us make better decisions later on. While the influence of Christianity in North America is without question, this expose well cites both its pros and cons. Noll assesses the status of the church-universal with wisdom.
