I have a similar model that I wore out with a lot of use. I needed another to play my collection of digital 8 tapes and save them to DVD's for future use. This camera wors well for that.

I needed one of these units so that I could transfer my Digital8 tapes to PC. I have a TRV310, but the motor is shot, so I needed a similar unit with a working motor. This unit was marked in eBay as refurbished, so I took a chance on it. I have transferred several tapes now and the motor appears to work fine. However, it did -not- come with a remote control--which is needed if you want to check the date/time on the videos as you work with them, because the camcorder itself has no button for it--and fortunately, the remote control I had with my 310 also works with this 340. Also, this unit did -not- come with a memory card as shown in the photo. And, this unit's button panel on the top is dented as though someone took a small hammer to it, although the panel buttons work fine, at least so far. And, this unit has a hand grip where the leather part is crumbling and makes a mess wherever I place it. So, although the main part that I needed works fine--the motor--the purchase was well short of what I expected for $160, compared to similar units out there on eBay. (Also Note! For this 340, only Firewire works with Windows 10. USB transfer does not--according to Sony themselves--so if you get a unit like this, make sure your PC/laptop has a Firewire input and you have the right 1394 cable!)Read full review

The TRV series is a great camera system. It is very easy to use. one of my favourite feature allows me to shoot video and still pictures at the same time without stopping to change format. While the camera is running in video mode I just clik the photo button to preserve any moment that I want to sentd to the Memory Stick. This happens seamlessly without any camera adjustments. In effect become both photographer and videographer. I only need one piece of equipment.
The 40 series (TRV240, 340, 740 and 840) of Sony's Digitil8 Camcorders are still nice to have, and not just for video transfer. They have a nice time lapse feature. Unlike the newer flash cams that only take a picture every few seconds, this one here moves the tape with sound. You can set it to .5 seconds up to 2 second intervals. And you can set that for 30 seconds, 1 min, 5 min or 10 minutes. You can set this up in your garage to catch the pesky neighborhood dog going through your garbage. Capture how long it takes for the city to fix the pothole in front of your house. This is a neat feature to have and has Super NightShot if you want to let it run in the dark. As far as remotes go, if the used one you buy doesn't have one, they're real cheap on eBay. RMT-811 is what you're looking for. Resolution is one step below HD 720p at SD 480p. Set it to 16:9 and it still looks pretty good on any HD TV. This one will play previously recorded 8mm, Hi8, and Digital8 tapes. This 40 series DCR-TRV cams were the last best 8mm cams Sony put out. The 50 series started the downward trend in my opinion in both build quality, and features until they stopped making Digital8. The reason I gave this a good rating for lightweight is, you can't make a camera like this lightweight! So Get 'em while you can. Read full review

Using this device for 8mm conversion, after many attempts to utilize USB firewire connection, finally realized that this device will not work with windows 7, because USB driver is non functioning with windows 7. Tried using XP mode in windows 7 virtual mode, nada..Then after much research found solution by using i-link cable. I happen to have installed in my PC a card reader with many inputs, one of which worked for the ilink cable...
I have owned this camcorder since 2002 and it has done an outstanding job for our family. All controls are within easy reach of your fingers and are intuitively operated...Recording movies is easy, cycling through film presets is a breeze, pictures are great especially with the 700x zoom...I mean I have used the 700x zoom while mountain hiking and was able to zoom up to the blue veins in the glaciers...just fantastic...transferring to a computer couldn't be easier, I'll bet I have over 100 DVDs of family events and memories...if the chance presents itself for you to buy a beautiful, fully functional camera like this one...DON'T HESITATE!!! Sony did an outstanding job with the design and function with this one.
The main facts to buy this camcorder: The well known reputation of Sony's video cameras in the Analog & Digital 8- HI8 mm video formats that allows to bridge the signals & pass them trh/ dvd recorders & PC's like windows or Apple OS. Wanting to get all our family video memories recorded in analog 8 & Hi 8 mm signal since 1992 into the new Digital format as DVD or hard drive storage, & preserve these, since the life of the tape is in average 10 years, our tapes has been keep in great storage condition, beating all the technical odds, found some started to lost image quality due to the well know deterioration of the (Fe) particles. opted for the DCR-TRV340 Handycam as my best choice for this family's project. I owned 2 sharp cameras (sold) and got 1 sony CCD-TRV65 back in 1996 still w/us like brand new performing beautify ever since, the only downside is, doesn't have USB & Firewire capability in order to convert to digital ('cause that technology wasn't available yet to the standard market, back in those years) Looking for a great camera, of course I'll enjoy it upgrading from my old loved CCD-TRV65 this Sony DCR-TRV340 marketed around 2002-03 Finally from all the SONY digital models in 8 mm format, this model DCR-TRV-340 is one of the most popular even compared w/ others more sophisticated launched in 2004-05-06 (don't like the Mini DVD disc format) It's in just excellent cosmetic & electro mechanically condition, felt that I found a great upgrade in a excellent deal, here in E-bay $150.00 + $8.50 s&h. The brief tests done the DCR-TRV340 are performing w/out any glitches, is loaded w/ many features. The downsides are the small resolution of the pictures & the MPG Video Movie clips captured thr/ the Memory Stick card, due to the limited CCD & other technical facts. Got a Belkin 6-4 pin FireWire cable, hooked the DCR-TRV340 to my APPLE Mac G5 w/ the I-Movie program &... fantastic !! got the movie on the screen w/ full access to all the features available on the Control Panel to play w/ sound, add music, store it to hard drive, burn a DVD or create U. own Movie w/a more professional look, applying simple to follow or sophisticated editing features steps, according w/ type of software used, as Final Cut Express I-Movie, Adobe. Want to mention the outstanding quality of the video, of the Sony DCR-TRV340 is really amazing, even compared w/newest models that claim to have today's technology, fell behind. So, my E-bay's friends No Doubts at all, the SONY DCR-TRV340 is a great Selection.Read full review
I like that you can take still pictures of objects at a long distance away. Also being able to view on the TV is great, or transfering them to my computer. More I use it the more I am glad I bought it.
I have owned this camcorder for over 4 years since bought it new in May of 2002. Cons? Non really, except the MPEG movie mode is only 15 seconds of 320x240 per clip. This camcorder records mini DV quality video on affordable Hi8 tapes. The picture noise in low light is very minimal compared with other comsumer DV camcorders. It's also been a very camcorder reliable. Overall, I would highly recommend this camcorder to anyone looking for a low cost camcorder today.
I bought this to copy my movies to dvd because mine stopped working properly. But since I got this one it made me wonder if my new one ever worked properly. It was an excellent replacement and works as if brand new.An excellent product at a great price
