About this product

Product Information

The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM is Canon's fourth Image Stabilizer lens. It is a high-performance L-series telephoto zoom lens offering sophisticated features and high image quality, a successor to the existing EF 100-300mm f/5.6L lens. Besides having an Image Stabilizer, this lens also features enhancements such as ring USM for silent AF, rear focusing, a longer focal length range, and fluorite and Super UD elements, which correct secondary chromatic aberrations for high image quality. It is the first EF zoom lens to have both rear focusing and a floating system to obtain high image quality at all focal lengths. With the EOS 3, autofocusing is possible while the EF 1.4x is attached to the lens.

  • This Is A Truely Fine Lens

A Canon product of the highest quality. I bought it through auction at $675 so the value was outstanding. I use it on an APS-C sensor camera so the lens is effectively a 160-640mm lens. There is a feature of lens stabilization for either horizontal or general movement. There is a feature of auto focus selection that helps speed up focusing by specifying at what distance your shooting will be, short, long, or general use. Love this lens!

  • Totally super stoked !!!!!

I am just like a small child on Christmas morning!!! 🎉🎊💥 I’m sooooo stoked!!! I have never had a Great still camera. But I’ve worked in the motion picture industry for 25 years. I love photography and this lens has put me in photography Heaven. My stuff looks so good. I can’t take credit for it. I CERTAINLY KNOW WHEN TO PUSH THE BUTTON in a sppets sequence shot. That is easy for me because I’ve been involved in sports for 50 years. But now I finally have a camera and lens that captures the most insane shots!!! I’m so happy with my new lens!!!! 🎉🎊🙏

  • Incredible lens at the best price

I have been saving up for this lens for a long time, ever since Canon announced it! I have had the 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS lens as a staple part of my kit for a few years now, and I'm really happy to be able upgrade that lens to this product. The solid construction and durability of the L series lenses Canon produces is unparalleled, and this lens is no exception. I do a great deal of traveling and moving around, and while the significant weight and size of this lens is difficult to manage, the results are worth the extra effort. The image quality is superb, and I do believe this will very quickly become my favourite lens! I'm loving the extra focal length range, and the improved image stabilization here really makes a difference when capturing subjects, especially when you do a lot of wildlife photography. I can't wait to utilize this lens more and more. Can't recommend it enough!

  • Super Sharp & Fast Focus

Such a great lens...fairly light weight and well constructed. Us this primarily for wildlife and nature. The best feature is the quick snap to focus. Love this lens!!

  • Canon lens at 400mm surpasses quaiity of my other lenses at 500mm

Easy to handle and focus in mauua mode. Much easier than my other 500 mm lenses by Tamron and Sigma. I'm using it with a 1.7 x magnifier and images are not as clear but may be my inexperience.

  • Totally worth it! Every single penny!

I wondered if these L series lenses were all they were really cracked up to be… boy after the first shot or two I was completely sold on this baby!! If you’re in indecision about getting one, take the chance and go. You won’t regret it. We tried the tamron 150-600 and it just didn’t satisfy us. Our lens is a 2005 model and it works perfectly fine, super sharp and has fast autofocus! This lens is a great birder lens and does well with tracking birds in flight. I’m very impressed and I hope I can hang onto this lens for a long time! It promises some good times!

  • There is no 100-400mm DO lens!

This lens is mis-labeled! There's no such thing as a Canon 100-400mm f4-5.6L IS DO. "DO" stands for "diffractive optics," and you can tell those lenses by their teal ring, in place of the "L" lenses' red ring. There is a 70-300mm DO, and a 400mm DO, but no 100-400. Anyway, the Canon EF 100-400mm f4-5.6L IS USM is a totally solid lens. It's old, and dated, but a great beginner telephoto if you're starting to get serious about stepping up your lens game. There are some known issues with filters, as for some reason the autofocus doesn't play well with a lot of screw-on filters, so it's best to just leave the front element uncovered, with this particular model. Otherwise, I can't think of anything negative to say about it; the newer one is better, of course, but for how old this lens is, it's wonderful!

  • A Great Canon Lens at a Great Price

The features of the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens are well documented in countless blogs and videos online. Taken together, they make for a great telephoto zoom lens. My copy did not disappoint. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

  • Nice lens!

I have taken some of my favorite pictures using this lens. I bought a canon 2x extender to use with it and it works if you manually focus it. It is sharper stopped down a bit.

  • Push-Pull zoom control

I shoot a lot of video and this thing changes focal length push-pull rather than twisting. Once it's focused, if you zoom in or out, it stays focused, amazing! I hear the generation 2 of this lens gives sharper image, that's why only 4 stars. But generally speaking I'm very happy with it and I would buy it again, and I love the push pull style zoom.
