Careibo is right -- this tripod is ideal with a smaller, point-and-shoot camera. Mine is an antique Konica-Minolta DiMage X50, without image stabilization(!). I had one of these tripods for a few years before I finally lost it, or maybe one of my grandkids thought it was too cute. The legs always telescoped and stayed in position, extended partially or all-6-inches with my lightweight camera. I suppose a heavier camera would cause the extended legs to collapse, since the legs don't have much of a locking mechanism, just a lot of friction. And if a big lens is attached, the center of gravity would be so far to the side of the legs, the whole thing would certainly tip over. I've never even touched a big lens like that. Especially for an old camera without image stabilization, being able to perch the camera on a little tripod provides more flexibility than just putting the camera on any found surface. At least, the tripod makes it possible to level the camera. Then, setting the time-delay provides a sharper picture that I could ever get because I never learned to hold a camera steady. I wasted a lot of time taking so long to replace my little tripod. I almost forgot. The ball-mount can be tilted so a little camera points straight down, making it easy to shoot small items close-up.Read full review

I bought this tripod for use with a bridge camera (Canon SX-60) after reading that it could support the weight. While it can do so without tipping as long as the lens isn't extended too far, the main problem is that the legs don't lock while extended, and collapse down from the weight of the camera. It is very well made and solid, however, and think it would be ideal with a smaller, point-and-shoot camera.
