About this product

Product Information

Musically oriented filmmaker Allan Arkush directs this fine biopic which tracks the legendary career of The Temptations. One of R&B's most influential, revered bands, the five men enjoyed overnight success and helped define the Motown period. Like many other success stories, though, this one has a dark side -- with self-destructive impulses and personal problems threatening to destroy the band's reign. In addition to capturing the drama of the group's rise and fall, THE TEMPTATIONS features eight of the classic songs which made them legendary, including "My Girl," "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone," and "Get Ready."

  • Loved it!

My daughter and I watched this movie on tv then borrowed it so many times from the library that I finally decided to buy it for her as a surprise gift her on eBay! Boy, was she excited on the day it arrived! Yes, it is a great film documenting the personal and professional lives of the four main guys and some of the later replacments--to an extent. I really got drawn in to care about these guys and what happened as they went through the ups and downs of the music business. Like many of us, they learned through trial and error while some didn't use the lessons to move into better lace which ultimately led t their demise. Just like real life.

  • Were are they now? The actors deserve an Oscar! This movie really touches your heart

The Great sing, acting ,dancing seem like the real deal!  I wonder if they were in other movies? Perhaps someone could post it on here any info about them.   They should do a biopic about the trials and tribulations of the actors on making this fantastic movie.  This movie and the actors deserve an Oscar.   A few months ago I went to the Temptations  concert and Otis Williams  said there was a  musical in the making, cant wait to see it! The Temptation's performed in Syracuse,NY last month. After seeing this awesome movie I would of loved to have gone to hear there infectiously catchy hits from the passed. This is the era that I grew up with, all the wonderful Motown super group's. At least you could understand what there were saying! This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. I have watched it 3 times and fell in love with the characters especially Corn and David. The Great sing and acting seem like the real deal WOW!!! You really care about them. I saw the movie once on TV and there was so many commercials that it didn't have the same impact as the DVD. I bet you cant watch it just once! Highly recommend to everyone!

  • The Temptations were the best -- and so is their story

The 1998 DVD Temptations TV mini-series is the best music biography ever, bar none. The original Temptations -- David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams -- were, far and away, the best vocal group of 1960s-'70s soul music. Each big hit, such as "My Girl," "You're My Everything," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "I Wish It Would Rain" and "Papa is a Rolling Stone" among others, is flawlessly done by a great acting, singing cast. Their story -- including ups, downs, triumphs, problems, wins, losses -- is honestly presented. I speak as a long-time devotee of original black rhythm and blues -- and writer of the authorized biography "Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight: the story of the spaniels' (August Press-1995). I heartily recommend "The Temptations" (1998) to everyone who loves the best soul and R&B music when it was really great -- in the 1950s and '60s. It will never be as good again.

  • Motown fans delight

The movie was well made, actors were great. The only problem with the story was the tragic lives most of the Temptations lived, and then died early. From my understanding, this was not unique to just this group. The fight to the top, then not to fully embrace positively that success, it was sad to watch. What can I say, I was tearing throughout the movie, but particularly at the end when Melvin died and Smokey Robinson was singing at his funeral. On the positive side, the movie was great to watch for the music and see the excitement in the early stages of success. The Motown sound - the sound of young America is exactly what made the mid 60s help change history with the civil rights movement. You can watch just about all the performers from Motown in those early years on youtube. Marvin Gaye, 4 Tops, Supremes, Martha and the Vendellas, The Miracles, Tami Terrell, Temptations, Gladys Knight, etc.

  • The Temps forever

Great movie and a good deal through eBay. I just wish I had seen the original Classic Five with Melvin, Otis, Paul, Eddie and of course David. At the time, there was no better group.
