Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam epic, loosely based on HEART OF DARKNESS by Joseph Conrad, tells the story of Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), a special agent sent into Cambodia to assassinate an errant American colonel (Marlon Brando). Willard is assigned to a navy patrol boat operated by Chief (Albert Hall) and three hapless soldiers (Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms, and Larry Fishburne). They are escorted on part of their journey by an air cavalry unit led by Lt. Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall), a gung-ho commander with a love of Wagner, surfing, and napalm. After witnessing a surreal USO show featuring Playboy playmates, and an anarchic battle with the Viet Cong, Willard reaches Colonel Kurtz's compound. A crazed photo journalist and Kurtz groupie (Dennis Hopper) welcomes the crew, and Willard begins to question his orders to "terminate the colonel's command." Considered to be one of the best war movies of all time, APOCALYPSE NOW features incredible performances and beautifully chaotic visuals that make it a powerful, unforgettable work.Released in August 2001, APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX, a restored and updated version of the 1979 film, includes 49 minutes of never-before-seen footage, a Technicolor enhancement, and a six-channel soundtrack.
Too many deleted scenes added to the movie that it is boring and lost its focus of the point of the story. Turned it off after the Playboy bunnies scenes in the trailers, that had no addition to the storyline whatsoever. Wish I had purchased the original, but it wasn't offered. This is the Redux version, I wouldn't waste your money.
The reality of the Vietnam War and the hell it caused.
It runs around four hours. Some of the parts added back were not really needed. But, they do show some different points of the war besides the main view. Seeing it again after over 30 years shows that it was a movie of it's time and is a bit spacy today. But, all in all is a good movie to show the stupidity and horrors our soldiers faced. If you are into action movies, this movie has some but not as much as others like Platoon. It holds your attention and makes you think about how sad it is that lessons were not learned and the same trash wars come out of DC today. This copy played perfectly. The sound and color are great. Anyone who knows details of Nam will find lots to say..yes..that was it. And for those who are young, will show that war is NOT gaming. It portrays the war that tore the states to pieces and sent returning soldiers into the mountains to hide from the world. There are a ton of top actors in this movie. Brando was better than usual..speaking clearly for a change. Fun to see them all so young. Sections of nudity, Sheen's backside and women frontal but nothing really bad. People shot and shows the contrasts of war. All in all..still worth seeing. It is not dated except some of the thinking is foggy. But, then..with the drugs back then..that is the way many people were.Read full review
Apocalypse Now Redux is one of my top five war movies ever. The story is engaging from the start, the actors do an phenomenal job making you believe what's on the screen. Will be getting Hearts of Darkness about what the cast and crew ent through making this movie, including several breakdowns. Watching the movie knowing this just adds that something extra to the story.
A very dark Keystone Kops cartoon, but good character study.
A very dark Keystone Kops presentation, not a family pic by any means, but a valuable character study. I think that combat vets can recognize most of the characters as representative of guys they knoew in the context of Vietnam, but is probably a puzzle for others. I think that Dennis Hopper turned in the best performance of the movie, followed closely by Robert Duval. Copola turns in a master work, as usual; either entertaining or as deep as you like, your choice. Everybody who might have an interest already hss the flick, but I couldn't recommend it as anything other than a character study. Sorry.
