A strong point of Sakade's Guide (compact 2nd edition, especially the coveted, hard-to-find paperback edition) is that it can be used as an inexpensive alternative to a Japanese electronic dictionary. As the Guide lists 1,850 general-use kanji (starting on p. 192) first by the number of strokes in the kanji and then by the number of strokes and ordinal number of the radical, you can find kanji you don't know how to read at near e-dictionary speed. For example, 学:8/3 = 8-stroke kanji with a 3-stroke radical (子 #39); 楽:13/4 = a 13-stroke kanji with a 4-stroke radical (木 #75). A fast and easy kanji search. This system also works in the new (much bulkier, far less portable) 2003, third edition. Floremce Sakade herself never mentioned radicals. The editors of the third edition (2003) mention only one (言 in 論). A couple of reviewers at amazon.com talk about kanji searches by stroke count in Sakade's Guide. By this, they mean going through all the 15-stroke kanji to find 論. Search by kanji stroke-count/radical stroke-count or radical number is much faster. 15/7 or 15/149 will pinpoint 論 in a jiffy listed with other 15-stroke kanji with the same seven-stroke radical (147): 課、調、談、請、論 (p. 269). Sakade's Guide is also very good at teaching the proper stroke order for writing kanji. Kanji are written stroke-by-stroke in a stroke-order diagram making them very easy to copy. Thanks to its compact size (2nd edition), it's an easy way to carry around 1,850 kanji for quick reference. 310whbRead full review
The book is written and edited for easy follow and retention. English being a hard language to learn for others this makes japanese easy to learn for the english speaking person wanting to learn another countries language.
