Boost the historical relevance of your vintage memorabilia collection with a yellow No. 1 Topps 1973 Willie Mays commemorative collectible baseball card. Officially known as the Home Run Leaders card, it depicts the image of Mays, playing in the National League, along with two of baseball’s most famous Hall of Fame players: Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron. At the time, Mays was 41 years old, and wearing a New York Mets uniform after being traded from the San Francisco Giants. After spending most of his stellar career with the Giants, first in New York, and then in San Francisco, Mays settled in with the Mets and continued being in contention for the most home runs in a career. Ruth’s home run record still for many years, and fans rooted for Mays each time he came to bat, anticipating yet another homer. Reaching 654 runs by 1973 was a great personal achievement for the hard-working Mays. He remains a popular fan favorite for Giants and Mets fans alike, as well as baseball fans in general. He’s considered one of the game’s all-time best all-around players. His seasons with the Mets era was his last, which makes this collector’s item even more valuable. Hank Aaron, the other active player on the card, was a few years younger than Mays but had more career homers, and his 674 total had fans excited about his prospects for reaching Ruth’s magic 714 career total. Like Mays, Aaron started his career in the Negro Leagues before being drafted into the Major Leagues. On May 17, 1970, he collected his 3,000th hit during a game against the Cincinnati Reds, and on August 10 of that same year, he set a National League record for hitting 40 or more home runs in seven seasons of play. The 1973 baseball card appeared during a time of high excitement among sports world professionals and fans of the game. As Aaron got closer to Ruth’s all-time record, there was a lot of excitement, speculation, and even dread for some. Aaron kept his cool and focused on his game and not concerning himself with the home run record. The 1973 season came and went, and Aaron ended the season with 713 homers, and all of baseball held its collective breath waiting to see what would happen in 1974. This collectible item recalls those heady days when Ruth still reigned supreme. Photos of each player appear in black and white, a vintage look that pays homage to Ruth’s status. Aaron succeeded in hitting his 715th home run in April of 1974, finishing with a career total of 755. Each one of these players achieved greatness and elevated the game of baseball for fans everywhere, which is why this collectible card from Topps is so special.
I still believe these 3, 2 I got to see, are the best home run hitters ever, bigger park dimensions, for Ruth a less lively baseball. A card any collector of great players would be happy to have.
