Being involved in historical reproduction, accuracy and informative content are of great importance to me as a buyer. The work of Angus McBride not only delivers on both those counts, but is also a delight and inspiration. This book encapsulates some of his finest illustrations of warriors and warlords from a wide range of historical and cultural backgrounds. With large colour plate expansions and a brief yet detailed description of each, it may not contain the depth of information from the original Osprey booklets, but still manages to be both beautiful and useful. Far from being dry and characterless, Angus McBride brings alive the key looks of each age, ranging from medieval Germanic knights to jaguar Aztec priest via Attila the Hun, ancient Egypt, seafaring privateers and much more. If you are looking for a wealth of historical information, this book is fairly light on text and concentrates mostly on the pictures. However what text is there is written in an engaging tone which manages to impart information without condescending or 'dumbing down' and the extremely detailed illustrations speak entirely for themselves. A must for anybody with a love of history, costuming, fantasy inspiration, re-enactment or simply colourful and dynamic illustration. I am thoroughly a fan and can see it being used frequently.Read full review
