I loved this movie. No, I love this movie. Part of what makes this movie so great is the soundtrack. It's one of those movies where you say to yourself, "I have got to have this soundtrack." Don't waste your and money. Stand alone, this soundtrack has few good songs. Townes Vandt Zsandts version of "Dead Flowers" and "Man in Me" by Bob Dylan are probably the best two tracks. Most of the rest is filler crap it seems. Perhaps my expectations were just too high for this album, but it seems to me that most of these songs seem good in the movie because they are juxtaposed so.
If you liked the movie, the star song, "Just Dropped in (To See What My Condition Was In" {unavailable anyplace else}) makes the purchase price worth it. That song is outstanding, funny, and is an amazingly addictive song. It's appeal lies in the memory of the movie, the joy and visual appeal of the song. It takes at least 10 years off your age. I was indifferent to the rest of the CD, a mix of songs, artists, languages, and I bought the album sheerly for the song aforementioned. I didn't care for the varied mix of songs/tempos, etc. Others may find the rest of the CD more interesting. For me, the purchase was a good one solely for the main song.
This soundtrack is comprised mostly of filler or mood music that played during the movie and not so much the cool songs that you want to hear. I just got it used on eBay and there were 4 songs I remembered loving, out of 14. The rest were instrumentals I don't recall (mood music), Andean music accompanied by wailing lyrics (played when Maude was painting), some German techno music and a song where a woman *pants* a lot called "walking song". There's an obscure song by Nina Simone and an operatic aria (I think) that I kept because I liked them. I deleted exactly half of the CD from my music library because a lot of it sucked. If you can get this CD used and on the cheap, go for it, but I caution you not to pay full price. They bought the cheapest songs to fill this soundtrack and I'm sure have made a mint off the thing. I'm glad I got it for $5 incl. shipping, or I would be seriously pissed off right now. I've seen the film 5 times.Read full review
