Much of the reason for the purchase of Nazareth's "Greatest Hits" was to satisfy nostalgic curiosity. The songs i grew up with, particularly Nazareth's three biggest hits, "Love Hurts", "Hair of the Dog", and "Holiday", sound just the way i remember them, and remain fun to listen to. Overall, however, i was mostly impressed with how unimpressed i was by Nazareth's "Greatest Hits". I never was a big fan even when i enjoyed listening to them on the radio, and this disc helped me understand why not. Dan McCafferty's vocal work was interesting way back when, but in the generations of music since his cock-rocking caterwaul has been surpassed for good (Steven Tyler, David Lee Roth) and ill (Axl Rose), and just doesn't measure up anymore as anything but one influence among others. Manny Charlton's guitar playing, on the other hand, just sounds downright facile. Even compared to his contemporary blooze and metal rockers (Kim Simmonds, Tony Iommi), there is little to recommend his work. Nazareth did have a unique sound, however, that i had always taken for granted. The production credits on this disc make some unflattering suggestions about the band, however: either that big, dark Nazareth sound was the product of a producer's imagination, or Nazareth really did sell out in a huge way with "Holiday", bringing in super-slick 70s slinger Jeff Baxter as a (last ditch?) effort to score another hit at a time when contemporary sensibilities were passing Nazareth by. It's funny how time reshapes the way music sounds, and time hasn't been kind to Nazareth (on the other hand, maybe that critique is as facile as Charlton's guitar playing: "the critics" never did see much of anything in the group in the first place!). In sum, the disc has a child's handful of worthwhile tracks, but i don't think that Nazareth and the concept of "greatest hits" are in truth compatible things.Read full review
