NotesEl Pili was born Alonso Mendez Heredia in Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz) in 1916. El Pili started off at intimate gatherings before taking part in shows organized by Manuel Vallejo, Manolo Caracol and Lola Flores, La Paquera, and Sebastian Nunez. One of the great Flamenco singers and dancers from Spain rooted in the gypsy tradition, El Pili's vocals have graced many of the great Flamenco records to come out of Spain in the 1940's and 1950's including those of master Flamenco guitarists Sabicas, Mario Escudero, Carlos Montoya and others. Presented here is his classic 1952 album, "Cante Hondo - Cante Flamenco." All selections newly re-mastered.
