Have not heard much from this band since I moved away from VT in 1995. Recently saw a Mike Gordon show at a local club, which rekindled my interest in the group. Won this CD/DVD new for $1 and really wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised right from the start, this was more of a true studio album than most of their earlier efforts. A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing is epic and dark, it's not a song they could have wrote back in the day. Much of the goofiness of early recordings gone, no "Fluffhead" or "David Bowie" on this one. I've also played this CD for a few of my friends who are less familiar with the band and all of them liked it. I can't say that for some of the early CD's I've played for people. Other standout songs are "The Connection", "Scents And Subtle Sounds", "Army Of One", and the title track. The "Specimens Of Beauty" DVD is also very cool, it gives about a 1/2 hour of insight into the groups recording process. I recommend this CD to both fans of the group and anyone who likes to hear a great rock album.Read full review
I actually bought this physical copy of the album just for the bonus DVD, Specimens of Beauty. The record itself is not Phish's best and I think it may have had a lot to do with Trey's drug use and drinking at the time. The songs feel sort of unprepared and rushed through the writing process. It's not bad at all, just forgettable. That being said, the DVD Specimens of Beauty is amazing glimpse into the recording process and best of all, a glimpse into The Barn!

This is one of the band's newer albums that has a more mainstream rock sound than most of their earlier stuff that is by no means commercial. Lets just say your boss might even like it. The new sound retains their original creative and innovative signature. It includes a brief documentary of sorts about the album that isn't really too informative but I did have a good time watching the guys getting drunk and talking about thier music. I HIGHLY recommend this album to any and every Phish fan!!

Initiallly gave this an undeserving poor review - am liking it much more now several years later. Having since heard a few of the songs live now makes a difference of course.
