  • Unlikable characters in Africa

This movie was OK, and maybe it was better in 1956. By modern standards, I couldn't really warm up to the characters. Ken (Victor Mature), the hero, hunts animals for sport, and is determined to track down and kill the man who killed his son, rather than let the police handle it. We are supposed to hate the Mau Maus, savage natives bent on killing off the white settlers; modern viewers are more likely to understand why the Mau Maus are angry...but then, shooting a little boy in the face IS pretty vicious. Linda (Janet Leigh), wears couture clothing on an African safari; when she goes over a waterfall, it's entirely due to her own stupidity. The jaunty, upbeat title song that plays over the opening & closing credits is inappropriate to the grim story. When a man is gored by a rhino, the actor is replaced by a dummy that is so fake I cringed for the wrong reason. The story has potential but the production shows its age.
