WELLER IRON
I bought this iron to use as a method of testing an AC power supply. It worked fine for my tests. I could have bought an iron cheaper that would have done what I needed but this one will work in my shop so I get a 2-fer from it. Being able to change tips is a nice feature. The quality is much better than cheaper irons. All in All, it's a good choice if your looking for something to use in your shop for occasional use. Defective Tip
Within 1 hour of using this 40w iron, the tip's coating heated up and came off, making it unsafe for soldering. Had to buy more tips for another $11, which makes this iron purchase a bust as a value. Also, the only tip that I can find is a screwdriver like 1/4" straight tip. Trying to contact Weller is next to impossible. If I had to do it over again, I'd buy the 25w with the different tips in the package. It just works like it should.
Weller is a trusted name on my workbench. I like the heat transfer capability and the ergonomics of the handle. The ease of swapping and availability of tips. I wouldn't waste my money on other brands. Excellent...but one shortcoming.
The product quality is evident. Nice feel of the handle to the hand, lights a bonus , worked fine on my first task , with plenty of heat with the 40W which was not availalble in a couple of my previous irons with some rather robust wire sizes and buss bars. But when I needed a smaller tip , there was none in the kit. The supplied tip was way too big for DIP or SMT work . Having trouble locating places to buy finer tips. After a lil tweaking
So i got my iron in the mail and our looked hefty like the tip was bigger than i had planned. Well i plugged it in and wow in like a min its hot but the tip is acting like its to hot for my solder, it was just rolling off. Then i noticed that all the videos i watched said leave a dap of solder on your tip to prevent corrosion, but the tip is not having it so i assumed that they put some fancy coating to help keep the tip clean. I grabbed a file and sure enough that was the case its copper under. I made the tip smaller and it works like a charm with out the coating on the tip.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
