Rez brings core gaming fundamentals and builds an incredible feast of gorgeousness for the eyes and ears. It's straight-forward fun with constant action. WHAT'S GOOD? The look. Nothing looks like it. It has a vector based look to it but with so much more depth and style. The controls. Simple. You use 1 analog stick and 2 buttons. This makes it one of those games that's easy to play, hard to master. Adaptive Difficulty. The game will change how hard the boss are so that it's relative to how you did during the level for that level. This helps make the game accessible to more people which is nice, but doesn't rob great players of the experience as you'll need to be great at the game to unlock everything. Lots to unlock. What you do unlock are new game-play modes. You unlock them by achieving certain targets in each level. It is hard to get everything unlocked mind you. One of the nice game-play modes that comes as you simply pass levels is the Traveling mode. This will allow you to play through levels without taking damage, so you can just sit back and have some fun. The experience. This game had me giggling with happiness when I first started playing. It's basically a shoot-em up, but they remove sound effects so that your actions are integrated with the music, and it's placed in a great atmosphere. I don't think I can write out what makes this game addicting, intense, or so much fun. Even reading this now, it sounds rather dull, but that's what makes a great experience great: You can't be told about it, you have to have it yourself. WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER? If you despise trance music you will not be able to stand this game. Since the music is so integral to the game, if the soundtrack makes you wince you won't have fun, and this may alienate some audiences. Core length: There's only 5 levels. Yes you can unlock new modes for these levels, but there's only 5 of them. More levels would have been nice. Since levels 1-4 are relatively short this may results in some getting bored with the game quickly. If you become devoted to this game, eventually you should get all enemy pop-ups and patterns memorized which may make some gamers bored with it eventually. So although these are legitimate downsides to the game, I'll admit I'm somewhat blinded to them as I found the levels that fun. The developers obviously put a lot of creativity, effort, and quality in to the 5 levels that are present. FINAL WORD: Points for creativity, and providing an unmatched experience compensate for it's small set-backs which are only potential set-backs at best. There's lots to appreciate in this title, including a sense of true gaming purity. If you like fast paced, action titles (even a little bit), you owe it to yourself to play this game.Read full review
I bought this game on ebay as it is an older game that has always received good reviews, but is currently out of production and impossible to find in stores. I managed to find a used copy at a reasonable price, but after playing it would not recommend spending the full asking price for a new copy. The game features excellent wire-frame graphics and music and provides an excellent challenge through the early rounds. It is in the later rounds that problems arise. As the challenge of the game and complexity of the graphics increase as you proceed through the levels, you tend to lose track of your aiming cursor within the more complex graphics and end up fixating on the cursor itself, instead of enjoying the graphics of the game while playing. The levels are not randomly generated and replay exactly the same each time, so that memorizing the levels becomes an important part of completing them. Overall, the game offers an excellent challenge and good replay value as you can replay completed levels for new high scores.Read full review
Rez assults your senses with color and synchronized sound effects, making you 'trip out' into the funky land. Pros: Rez combines the elements of a shooter with that of a rhythm game. Every shot and every explosion produces a harmony of beats that cascades through the level. After destroying some enemies you can pick up an evolution object, get enough of these and you evolve into a higher form of being. Your power grows, and the beats that you produce change as well. The game's graphics are excellent, but their dynamic beauty can not be captured in screen shots. They must be experienced. The game has many different modes, and unlockable bonuses. Also REZ has a functional story, but you have to read the manual to know it. Cons: Rez is a short game. There are only 5 zones, with the 5th zone being the largest. There are some bonus zones. Still, the game can be beaten in a single day. The game's story is never integrated into the experience and is hidden in the depth of the game manual. Bottom Line: If you have an open mind, and if you like space shooters OR rhythm games then you should buy this game.Read full review
I bought this game at the recommendation of the gamers in my house and I have to say it is a great game. Rez is a surprising and unique find in the sea of video games. It is a shooter type game with an added musical twist. The basic premise; you are hacking into a computer system shooting down its defenses, upgrading your avatar/program as you progress but the sound track changes/is added to musically as you shoot enemies down. Along with changes in the feedback of the controller (vibration) a rhythm develops in playing making it a fun game. It is a little odd at first to play as you get the game basics down but that's what the travel mode is for, allows you to play without taking damage. Visually the game is striking as the virtual landscape of the system scrolls by. The sound tracks are very cool and don't get boring repetitive like the sound tracks of other games, the ones you turn the sound on the TV off to play for any length of time. After a little while I found I was grooving my way through the game.Read full review
This game is crazy awesome. There aren't any other games quite like it. I was just recently looking up youtube video's of it's gameplay missing it's music and captivating visuals. I decided to go on ebay and take a gander at what was available. I was very fortunate to find a game that had been very well taken care of. The back of the disc looked nearly new. Gamestop couldn't have sold me a prettier used game.
